Mazda figures its wagon buyers are younger, more often male, more impetuous therefore, and more likely to have use for a 3180-pound car bristling with 263 horsepower and returning just 18 mpg when flogged.
Mazda’s engineers twisted the suspension strings tighter with the goal of reducing wallow in corners and during fast transitions without ruining the base 3’s relatively supple ride.
Calls to Mazda yielded tips: Pop the clutch at 2900 rpm, upshift at 6000 — redline is 6700 — and flat-shift through second and third (which means don’t lift at all — the mechanical equivalent of dropping a Steinway on the clutch and half-shafts and violating our test procedure).

List of Mazda engines - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Even though Mazda is better known for their Wankel "rotary" engines, the company has been manufacturing piston engines since the earliest years of the Toyo Kogyo company.
Beginning with a tiny 358 cc keicar engine, one of the smallest ever made, Mazda continues to this day to be a leading developer of this type of engine.
All of Mazda's Wankels are based on their first design of the 1960s, though there have been significant developments over the four decades since.

Mazda MX-Flexa Review | AutoSite Car Previews   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Initially, we thought this might be a replacement for the Mazda MPV minivan, but since it is based on an enlarged version of the Mazda 3 platform and is powered by a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine, it’s clear that the MX-Flexa could not serve as the MPV’s replacement.
The engine is essentially identical to the larger displacement four in the Mazda 3 and the standard engine in the Mazda 6, good for about 160 horsepower.
With the upcoming Mazda 2, the existing Mazda 3 Hatchback, the dashing Mazda 6 Wagon and a redesigned MPV minivan in the works, it’s doubtful that the company will deem space wagons suitable for the U.S. Which, we suppose, was the point of debuting the MX-Flexa in Geneva rather than Detroit.

The 238-horsepower rotary engine is lively and quick, and the short-throw six-speed manual transmission allows you to shift gears rapidly.
Like the RX-7, the RX-8 is driven by a rotary engine, which relies on rotors moving in a circular motion for its power instead of pistons moving up and down.
Such efficiency allows Mazda to position the engine for 50-50 weight distribution between the front and rear, the ideal mix for high-performance handling.

Mazda engineers found in developing the engine that knocking would only occur under certain operating conditions: in a 2500-3750 rpm zone when intake temperature exceeds 85 degrees celcius.
As the engine is not intercooled in stock form, the addition of one will gain extra power even with the stock boost (perhaps 180-190hp?).
