It was sold as the Mazda 808 in some export markets such as New Zealand and Australia and Mazda 818 in many others (presumably due to the usage of numbers with a middle zero by Peugeot for its automotive models).
The top spec Mazda Neo was fitted with a DOHC 1800 cc BP engine which produced around 100kw, this was the same engine fitted to the base model Mazda Lantis.

Mazda itself does not even have its own mid-size engine (3-some liters) as the current 3.0L in the Mazda6 and MPV is just a Ford Duratec 30.
Mazda is only able to use a mid-size engine in North America because it is "borrowing" from Ford but in other parts of the world, Ford is not able to supply Mazda with the 3.0L V6 and Mazda does not haf its own.
For Mazda to even start thinking about a 9, they would first haf to have a 3.0L available in their 6's thoughout the world, which is what they are trying to do.

When I saw this thread, I figured you guys were talking about the 1st gen Probes which were based on a Mazda platform and represented one of the first times that an American manufacturer sold a Japanese-based car but put their own body on the chassis.
Mazda's engineers weren't happy, but it was approved, and the car was re-engineered to fit the new design.
The third generation Probe was to be built on the same platform as the Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique as the earlier generation Probes were built on the Mazda MX-6 and 626 platform.
