Mazda OHV engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mazda's tiny OHV was the only four-cylinder in the class in the 1960s, but was outperformed by 2-stroke and I3 powerplants from other companies.
Mazda also developed a prototype Wankel engine under the limit, but its introduction was blocked by the company's larger competitors.
Bore was 58 mm and stroke was 74 mm for this water-cooled SOHC engine.

Unlike conventional piston engines, it uses triangular rotors instead of pistons to be the device for transforming heat energy from combusted gas to kinetic energy driving the drive shaft.
Worst of all, piston engines were improved a lot during the past decade in terms of smoothness, and further enhanced the advantage of fuel consumption over rotary engines.
The engine was upgraded to 265hp first and eventually reached the domestic upper limit of 280hp in the Type RS, which was the last major update.

 Musclecarclub.com - Library - Tech - Engine
The internal combustion engine burns fuel within the cylinders and converts the expanding force of the combustion or "explosion" into rotary force used to propel the vehicle.
Because the engine expands and contracts with heating and cooling, it is easy for joints to leak, so the gaskets have to be soft and "springy" enough to adapt to expansion and contraction.
The diameter of the cylinder is called the "bore" while its height is called its "stroke." The "displacement" of an engine is actually a reflection of the total amount of volume of the engine's cylinders, and nothing to do with the actual size of the engine itself (although the two are highly correlated).

GM trademarks "LSX" engine name | Leftlane News - Car News For Enthusiasts   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The filing is described as relating to "engines for land vehicles." It's unclear if the trademark refers to a future Chevrolet LS-series engine, or if it's a reference to the 'LSx' term used by many GM enthusiasts to denote an LS-series engine.
OHV engines are definately low-tech and inferior (in theory, and I would argue in practice) to OHC engines.
However new materials have allowed OHV engines to close the gap a lot to OHC engines, for example Titanium alloy pushrods to lower momentum in the pushrods, allowing much higher revs, etc. OHV engines also have the added benefit of being easily able to produce a lot of low-end torque.
