Mazda's competition debut was on October 20, 1968 when two Mazda Cosmo Sport 110S coupes entered the 84 hour Marathon de la Route ultraendurance race at Nurburgring, one finishing in fourth place and the other breaking an axle after 81 hours.
Mazda is also the most reliable finisher at LeMans (with the exception of Honda, who have entered only three cars in only one year), with 67% of entries finishing.
Mazda is the only Asian automaker to have won the 24 Hours of Le Mans race, which the company accomplished in 1991 with their rotary-powered 787B.

It was augmented by the Mazda P360 "Carol" 2+2 in 1962, as well as a convertible version in 1964.
The engine was replaced with the Carol's 358 cc I4 in 1964, and the B360 was replaced by the Mazda E360 in 1967.

The first model in 1960 was the R-360 (the number indicates the capacity), a coupe that survived until 1970.
In 1962, the slightly larger Carol (available with 360 and 600 cc) followed, a car that was similar to the Ford Anglia and had a reverse-angle rear window.
One of the reasons Mazda became known in Germany was because of its takeover of the Wankel rotary piston license in 1961 and is still faithfully using and developing this particular combustion engine technology today.

06-08-2005, 05:12 PM Yes, it actually says R360 Coupe on the sides, just behind the doors on the belt line.
But the washed out silver decals are hard to see, especially in my out of focus shot that would show it best...
My old rotorhead best friend from high school built every Mazda he could get his hands on, and built this and the Carol from the series.
