Mazda 323 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Mazda 323 (called the Familia in Japan) was a subcompact car produced by Mazda in Japan between 1976 and 2003.
It was known in the United States as the Mazda GLC (which stood for 'Great Little Car') and was a version of the fourth-generation Japan-market Mazda Familia.
The 1999 BJ platform was updated with a 4-door sedan or 5-door hatchback chassis based on the larger Mazda 626 and more engine choices.

CanadianDriver: Platforms: the building blocks of cars
Late last year Mazda took over responsibility for a new generation of subcompact cars to be sold around the world, generating annual sales of up to one million by the end of the decade.
Mazda, of course, is not the only carmaker using a "platform strategy" to create a variety of models from the same set of underpinnings, all sharing as much as 60 to 70 per cent of the same parts.
There is, however, a danger in the platform approach, one perfectly illustrated by a trap GM fell into in the mid-1980s and early 1990s.

The Mazda Atenza or Mazda6 is an automobile from the Japanese carmaker Mazda.
Not all configurations are available in all areas, for example the Mazda 6 as released in Australia was a four-cylinder car only, while the last 626 which it replaced was a six-cylinder car, leading to much amusement as to the choice of names.
Although Mazda currently has no plans to enter the car into rally racing, the Mazdaspeed 6 is meant to compete with the rally-car-derived Subaru Impreza WRX STi and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.

Elsewhere, Toyota plans to reduce its platform total, excluding commercial vehicles, from around 15 to five or six by the early 21st century; Nissan's target is about five, from 24 today; and Mitsubishi's is five, from seven or eight.
Mazda, which previously had planned to reduce its total from five to three, is currently in a state of flux as the company is in the process of integrating many of its platforms with Ford.

The problem with using a foreign platform is that it must be a compromise: not the best starting point for the American car but the best that can be worked out from a vehicle designed for Europe first.

The new enterprise portal | InfoWorld | Analysis | 2004-01-09 | By Eric Knorr   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
To evaluate a car dealership's performance, Mazda field managers were once forced to compile green-bar printouts, conjure up the right spreadsheet, and have an assistant create a report from raw data supplied by a third-party service.
Now that Mazda has deployed a Plumtree portal that consolidates all that information in a single, browser-based dashboard, the process takes field managers roughly an hour, he claims.
That little tale, with its dramatic productivity boost, illustrates how the enterprise portal has evolved from vague '90s notions of "empowering" employees with a document library to practical, tailored solutions for departments or jobs hobbled by a lack of integration.
