At Savernake Station one is brought within sight of the forest, and entering it at this point one is able to enjoy a lovely walk of 6 or 7 miles, which brings one out close to Marlborough Station, with the town on the further side of the railway.
At the bottom of the hill, and spreading rapidly in all directions, are quantities of modern houses and villas, but the point of greatest interest in Harrow is the celebrated school, wonderfully situated on the very summit of the hill, with views extending over thirteen counties.
Gad's Hill had a peculiar fascination for Dickens, for it was on the highway there that he obtained his wonderful insight into the character and manners of the various tramps and showmen he portrays in his books.

 John Vanbrugh
His associations with London are commemorated in Greenwich, London where a road (Vanbrugh Hill) and a pub (The Vanbrugh Tavern) to the east of Maze Hill railway station both bear his name (a building at York University also bears his name due to its proximity to Castle Howard).
A palatial building resembling a Scottish castle or fortress (now housing private apartments, but previously a school and an orphanage) overlooks Greenwich Park at 121 Maze Hill ( blue plaque).
Although his plans were unpopular with many (including Sarah Churchill, its future resident), it was eventually completed, and Vanbrugh became Comptroller of Royal Works in 1714.

 Commemorations of The Somme
The mounds on the other side of the railway cutting were called "The Caterpillar" and "The Dump" by the soldiers, but it was Hill 60 which they feared most.
Hill 60 heaved for a few moments as the huge underground eruptions forced their way to the surface and then the heart of the hill was flung skyward, taking with it trenches, machine-gun posts, and hundreds of German defenders.
Because the road junction and railway crossing were marked on all the maps, the German artillery officers could calculate their ranges most accurately, and drop shells on it to within a metre or two.

 Scandinavians to Zion
The general insinuation—which the evidence here proves untenable— about the whole movement from Scandinavia seems to be that the Mormons were "segregated on the boat and on arrival at New York were herded in separate railway cars and locked in.
For them the Skandinavens Stjerne became an emigrant guide, its minute instructions encompassing every detail of preparation and departure; and the presiding elders in the conferences were their faithful shepherds, guiding them through the legal maze of obtaining passports, assisting them in the disposal of their goods, and even bending to the task of packing.
The Jensen family took up stations like so many other families: father and son James were the wheel team; younger brother and sister Karen were the leaders; the mother pushed; - seven trudged alongside, an infant under two rode.

Photography, Railway and non railway related!
I started railway photography since June 2000, as I was on camp, and I found something interesting to do, but I had gathered a few snaps of trains before that!
So, I took shots with this camera from the camp, to the Mellemium Dome, and even to a meet up on the Great Central Railway in Loughbrough!
Realsing that the flash was going to be a pain, I decided to try and buy my own camera, for £40, but I got one cascaded down from my mum, to me! It was a Cannon IXUS camera, it was quite expensive at the time.
