Mbarara has a tropical type of climate with a bi- modal rainfall pattern averaging 1200mm per annum.

 The AIDS Support Organisaton: Mbarara
It is located adjacent to the Mbarara University Teaching Hospital complex on Mulindwa Road, on Mbarara-Kabale road in Mbarara Municipality.
In the strategic plan 2003-2007, TASO Mbarara plans to provide support to 75 children to be boarders and another 133 children to be non-boarders per year to access primary, secondary and tertiary education.
TASO Mbarara started provision of food materials (corn soya brand (CSB) and vegetable oil) in January 2002, a donation from USAID through an intermediary ACDI/VOCA for five years to TASO clients and their family members.

Mbarara University won the 3rd prize of the Makerere Vice Chancellors Excellence Award for 2006.

Mbarara district has started a crusade against measles, which is now a threat in the district, with over 1,000 cases and ten deaths since the beginning of this year.
The 10 districts are: Mubende, Kiboga, Mbarara, Kabale, Palisa, Kumi, Soroti, Kaberamaido, Katakwi and Pader.

Kizza Besigye has addressed rallies in Kabuyanda and Kaberebere Town Centers in Mbarara Districts and is now headed to address a mammoth rally at Boma Grounds Mbarara town.
Mbarara town has closed and all roads lead to Boma.

 AEGiS-NV: TASO opens sh1.2b centre in Mbarara
The AIDS Support Organisation (TASO), with support from Pfizer Inc, opened a new AIDS counselling and training centre in Mbarara recently to serve some of the 50,000 clients.
The US$700,000 (sh1.2b) centre, also funded by Pfizer, the world's largest research based pharmaceutical company, is the second of four TASO regional facilities to be upgraded.
In addition to scaling up ARV therapy to 1,000 patients in Mbarara, the centre also hosts a laboratory that supports clients from two other centres in the region.

America Days in Mbarara, a showcase of U.S. Government activities and partnerships in Uganda, entered its second day on February 10, 2005, with a visit by Ambassador Jimmy Kolker, local and community leaders, and U.S. Embassy officials to Mbarara Hospital.

Characteristics of lactation performance, based on AM milk offtake and conformation, of Ankole cattle were studied during one year in 37 herds with 606 recorded cows in Mbarara district in southwestern Uganda.
Although the Ankole cows performed best on the improved pastures, their future may relatively be more favourable in the original non-cleared bush areas because of the gradually increasing competition from exotic dairy breeds and their crosses.
A study, described in detail by Ndumu (2000), was undertaken with the purpose of recording a sample of the population in Mbarara district.
