McAlmont and Butler - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Both Butler and McAlmont had already experienced success in the music industry; Butler was the guitarist in the indie/glam rock band Suede, until his acrimonious departue during the recording of their second album, Dog Man Star.
McAlmont, a soul singer with an impressive three octave range, had been part of the duo Thieves with Saul Freeman, who released a handful of singles and had opened for Morrissey on tour before breaking up.
Their recording sessions had produced enough material for an album: The Sound of McAlmont and Butler was released early in 1996 and made number 33 in the UK albums chart.

Not only was Butler back in the spotlight but he was writing, playing most of the music, and singing to boot; as a vocalist he proved he could carry a tune remarkably well, his fragile vocals tucked into the multi-layered folds of the music.
Butler emerges as the frontman of a group and that's crucial to the equation here.
Butler sticks a fine solo in on the other side of a mid-track plateau and eventually transforms the song into a Pink Floyd-esque slice of atmospheric, floating pop psychedelia.

McAlmont and Butler | The Guardian | Guardian Unlimited
During their brief partnership seven years ago, singer David McAlmont and guitarist Bernard Butler were pop's oddest couple, and their differences swiftly led to a mud-slinging divorce.
When he finally contacted the singer, who had never bettered his two Top 20 singles with Butler, McAlmont took little persuading that they were a stronger proposition together than apart.
The hits Yes and You Do unleashed McAlmont's falsetto to explosive effect, stopping drinkers mid-sip as he scaled an impossible wall of notes while Butler made a acoustic guitar sound like a whole band.

As the familiar drum beat to their comeback single "Falling" counts in bars to the Spector sized string crescendo and the angelic tones of David McAlmont and trademark guitar from Bernard Butler you realize just how much we've missed one of the greatest songwriting partnerships of the past decade.
Their back catalogue may be as slim as Eminem is shady and their solo work leaves a lot to be desired, but together they create the type of magic that once was only written in the songwriting factories for Motown.
Still, like all great partnerships, they thrive of the buzz and the animosity of being two totally different souls brought together by the love of music and it's this friction which resulted in the pair acrimoniously splitting up back in 1995 leaving McAlmont reeling claiming that Butler was homophobic and the partnership was unworkable.
