The McCormick Tribune Campus Center is located at the historic 120-acre (50-hectare) campus of the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago.
The campus, designed by Mies van der Rohe who became the head of IIT's architecture program in 1938, after the closure of the Bauhaus, is bordered by an expressway and divided in half by the elevated trains.
The new Campus Center includes two primary components: A 10,690 square meter, one-story building, sheathed in metal and glass, and a 161 meter (530 feet) long stainless steel tube that sits directly above the building’s roof, significantly muffling the noise and vibration generated by passing trains.

The campus center proper couldn't be started until the $13.6-million tube had been completed, and much of the work on the tube could only take place between midnight and 5 a.m., when trains weren't running.
The campus center itself cost $34.6-million and ended up at 110,000 square feet, after several features were subtracted to keep the price tag down.
The campus center is only one story high, although the food court, the faculty dining area, the auditorium, and the ballroom are all set well below grade.

The Tube was completed last year, and inside the Campus Center the sound of the “L” is barely audible, though north of the structure the trains still drown out conversation.
Koolhaas says that though the scale of the center is “very modest” compared to Crown Hall, the orange of his building “somehow brings out the color in the Mies building also-not only by contrast, but also by raising the issue of color.
For the Campus Center he chose translucent Panelite for the countertops in the cafe, for the tables in the study carrels that overlook the Mies courtyard, and, most strikingly, for the walls of the freestanding, amoeba-shaped washroom that sits just inside the entrance, opaque enough, alas, to preclude any anatomical shadow puppets.

And the solution, a freestanding sound-insulation tube around the El tracks, seems to force its weight down into the Campus Center, like a metallic whale, pressuring it into a hive of activity, while the exterior form of the building is squeezed outward, in its angular, building-like way.
