 Ian McDiarmid (
Ultimately deciding that he was not suited for a career as a clinical psychologist, McDiarmid decided to take the plunge into acting, working for a year to support his training courses at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.
McDiarmid began moving into television and film in the late 1970s with his casting in a supporting role in the TV series The Professionals.
Like so many other actors in the Star Wars trilogy who traded in recognizable facial/bodily/vocal features for the demands of their often heavily made-up or computerized characters, McDiarmid did earn a certain amount of fame for his work in the film, but it was largely confined to the realm of enthusiastic Star Wars fans.

McDiarmid originated the role of the prune-faced emperor in 1983’s “Return of the Jedi” and has been re-creating the character with the current prequel trilogy.
With only a few film and TV credits at the time, McDiarmid landed the small but critical role as the emperor, who is heartlessly ready to sacrifice Vader to turn his son, Luke Skywalker, into an even more powerful henchman.
Instead, McDiarmid had to learn intricate dueling moves so he could duke it out with the Jedi masters the emperor seeks to topple.

McDiarmid Park is often unfairly blamed for the demise in atmosphere at St. Johnstone matches over the years, but given its laid-back surroundings you might understand why.

McDiarmid Park rose from the fields in the summer of 1989, in time for an opener against Clydebank which saw over 7,000 fans packing themselves in to see the first home win of that promotion-winning season.
