The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 was the first of a new generation of large long-haul airliners, emerging during the late eighties, intended for routes and/or frequencies for which the Boeing 747 was too big.
Although McDonnell Douglas was a master in stretching aircraft like the DC-8 and DC-9 and although it considered stretching the DC-10 from the beginning, it never did so until the late 1980s when it launched the MD-11.
McDonnell Douglas also offered the MD-11 with three engine-options: the General Electric CF6-80, the Pratt and Whitney PW4360 and the Rolls-Royce Trent.

 McDonnell Douglas MD-11
(In June of 1983 the company adopted a new system of MD designations, breaking away from the old Douglas Commercial (DC) system.) The MD-11P, all passenger version, is able to carry 293 passengers, or 405 passengers in single economy-class seating.
McDonnell Douglas began studies in 1978 of an aircraft to replace the DC-10 on the Long Beach production line.
This is essentially a stretched DC-10, but with a new outer wing incorporating winglets, a new tail, a two-pilot EFIS flight deck, and the choice of either General Electric CF6-80C or Pratt & Whitney PW4460 engines.
