McDonnell Douglas DC-9 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Originally designated as DC-9-80, the plane was originally marketed as the "DC-9 Super 80." Changed before the initial launch, the MD-80 designation was a marketing move to show that McDonnell Douglas had a new airliner for the 1980s.

 MD-80 / MD 90 [DC-9]
(MD comes from McDonnell Douglas - Douglas Commercial and McDonnell CO had already fused in 1967.)
The break with the past of Douglas Commercial involved the renaming of the model "Super 80" to "MD-80" (the number of 80 identifies the basic type and the sequential numbering the respective model).
Already 1979, the DC-9 "Super 80" could take-off, which was renamed soon in "MD-80" and which formed basis of the successful MD-80 series.

Discussion On June 15, 1999, the FAA issued AD 99-13-07, amendment 39-11201 (64 FR 33392, June 23, 1999), applicable to certain McDonnell Douglas Model DC-9-81 (MD-81), DC-9-82 (MD-82), DC-9-83 (MD-83), DC-9-87 (MD- 87), MD-88, and MD-90-30 airplanes.
Explanation of Relevant Service Information Since the issuance of AD 99-13-07, the FAA has reviewed and approved Boeing Alert Service Bulletin MD80-32A308, Revision 04, dated June 12, 2001 (for Model DC-9-81 (MD-81), DC-9-82 (MD-82), DC-9-83 (MD- 83), DC-9-87 (MD-87), and MD-88 airplanes).
Thus, we have not included Model MD-90-30 airplanes in the applicability of this proposed AD.

Similar Condition Exists on Other Models The shock strut cylinders on certain McDonnell Douglas Model MD-90- 30 airplanes are identical to those on the affected Model DC-9-81 (MD- 81), DC-9-82 (MD-82), DC-9-83 (MD-83), and DC-9-87 (MD-87) airplanes; and Model MD-88 airplanes.
Therefore, those Model MD-90-30 airplanes may be subject to the unsafe condition due to exchanging a shock strut cylinder of a MLG from an affected airplane.
Failure of the shock strut cylinders of the MLGs due to cracking could lead to collapse of the MLGs and consequent reduced controllability of the airplane during landing.
