F2H Banshee - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The McDonnell F2H Banshee was a military carrier-based jet fighter aircraft, used by the US Navy from 1951 to 1959 and by the Royal Canadian Navy from 1955 until 1962.
The Banshee was also fitted with Westinghouse radar equipment, enabling the fighter to be used for all-weather missions, and the cannons were moved downwards and rearwards away from the nose to accommodate the new radar.
The subsequent movie of the same name used F9F Panthers in place of Banshees for all the flying sequences, although parked Banshees are visible in the background of several scenes.

McDonnell's Banshee was developed from the Navy's first jet powered fighter aircraft, the FH-1 Phantom.
With performance similar to the Grumman F9F, the Banshee proved to be less durable in combat and that standard F2H-2 could not carry as great a weight of ordnance as the Grumman.
Pilots loved the docile handling of the Banshee and the ease of which she could be flown.

The McDonnell F2H Banshee fighter, immortalized by James Michener in his novel, The Bridges of Toko-Ri, was similar in design and appearance to the FH-1 Phantom, but it had twice the power and carried bombs as well as rockets and cannons.
The Banshee was a multimission aircraft: used as a day fighter, as a night fighter and for photoreconnaissance; a variant was specially strengthened to carry nuclear weapons.
Banshees became the U.S. Navy's standard aircraft for all-weather fighter missions of extended range and served with the Navy until September 1959, when the Canadian Navy acquired 39 former F2H-3s.

The effectiveness of the Banshee's primary weapon, the Sidewinder 1A heat seeking air-to-air missile, was demonstrated in November 1959, while VF-870 was deployed to the Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton England.
The F2H-3 Banshees were flown from the Naval Air station HMCS Shearwater and the aircraft carrier HMCS Bonaventure by VF 870 and VF 871 squadrons from November 1955 to September 1962 when the Banshee was retired from the RCN without replacement.

Shortly after its first flight, the XF2D-1 was redesignated XF2H-1 when the factory code for McDonnell changed from D to H. Flight tests and service evaluations went fairly well, but some control problems were encountered which resulted in the decision to replace the dihedral tailplanes of the prototypes with tailplanes without dihedral on production models.
The first operational unit to receive the Banshee was VF-171 based at NAS Cecil Field in Florida, trading in its Phantoms for the new type.
The ability of the Banshee to reach such extreme altitudes was an embarrassment for the Air Force, which had been arguing that its B-36s flew so high that they were immune from interception.

The Banshee's engines were installed in expanded wing roots next to the fuselage to reduce aerodynamic drag.

The McDonnell F2H Banshee model became the US Navy's first truly viable jet aircraft to operate from a carrier.
It proved itself as quite a reasonable ground attack aircraft in Korea as it was not a model that was really capable of air combat, the role for which it was built.
Overall this presents a very nice replication of the Banshee, and given that you will need to find Airfix's example you should find the same construction details as this MPC version.
