The 49-year-old O'Neill, a native of Chateaugay in upstate New York, is an assistant coach to Rick Carlisle with the Indiana Pacers.
O'Neill was a point guard for the McGill Redmen from 1975 to '78, garnering the nickname Mad Dog.
He helped the Redmen reach the CIS national championship tournament in 1977-78 when the team went a school record 28-5 for the season.

 Men's hockey wins, women lose in McGill exhibitions ::
The Redmen mounted a brief comeback when Louis-Simon Allaire scored with 8:58 to go, but Dartmouth freshman Brandon Harrington stepped up and flicked a beautiful wrist-shot from the blue-line, catching the Redman goalie Jean-Michel Fillatrault completely by surprise foiling any hope McGill had of a comeback.
Despite the cries of the McGill faithful that the referees missed many calls of roughing and boarding against Dartmouth, the officiating, in general, was top-notch.
The game was tight all the way to the end, with Dartmouth trailing by a goal and deciding to pull their goalie in order to play with six skaters for the last 48 seconds.

“An ideal scenario would have been for McGill to finish the season and they were out of the playoffs anyway and then maybe right after the season, announce that they were going to suspend their football team for next year,” BĂ©langer said.
Though some may shudder at the thought of a similar incident happening to the UW football team, Davis said “nobody really pays attention to” McGill’s Redmen football team, and said hockey, rugby and baseball are all more popular.
