 Iditarod Trail Invitational - Route Discription
The race begins in Knik, Alaska and follows the Iditarod Trail to McGrath, Alaska for the finish of the three hundred fifty mile "short race".
For the Nome racers McGrath is just another checkpoint and veterans know better than to stay too long or their bodies will go into recovery mode and make hitting the trail again extremely difficult.
Leaving McGrath they will soon be in Takotna only twenty miles away but after that the nearly two hundred miles to the next village of Ruby is the longest uninhabited stretch of the trail.

Both Yee and McGrath have Type I diabetes, which used to be known as juvenile diabetes, and have been living with the disease for most of their lives.
Much of what McGrath and Yee teach the diabetics in their classes is based on a landmark study that showed that retinopathy, or eye disease, which is common among diabetics, could be decreased by 75 percent with intensive therapy.
McGrath and Yee say the center has become a continuous resource for the program’s graduates, who call back with questions as much as 15 years after completing the class.
