He was interned in 1971 and later wrote an excellent and valuable book on the history of internment in Ireland, as well as another book, 'The Guineapigs', about the selection and torture of a group of internees, which caused much embarassment to the state.
A mile or so out of Newry, McGuffin explained to the fabled member of the Chicago Seven that the town we were approaching was in the grip of revolution.
McGuffin was interned in August 1971, as far as I know the only Protestant lifted in the initial swoop.

I would say that the Ring is not a McGuffin, because the powers of the ring are known, used, the use changes the story, and it's final destruction destroys the evil and saves the good.
The briefcase would be a McGuffin because it never matters what is in the case and it is never used.
My view of the McGuffin (as a lecture prop) is simply this: it must be an object that holds the student's attention and keeps him or her focused on the movement of the lecture material.

He is said to have derived it from a story about two Scottish men in a train, in which a plot device of this kind occurs; presumably MacGuffin is the way it was spelled in that story.
However, the more common spelling now is McGuffin, which is the OED’s preference and the only one I’ve encountered in British publications.
It’s possible, though, that the lower-case version may prevail as the word becomes generic and the links to its origin are lost.
