The county has approximately 10,000 residents, and is bordered by the South Newport River to the north and the Altamaha River to the south.

McIntosh County was split off from Liberty County in 1793.
In the county the population was spread out with 28.00% under the age of 18, 7.20% from 18 to 24, 26.90% from 25 to 44, 26.10% from 45 to 64, and 11.80% who were 65 years of age or older.
McIntosh County is home to the McIntosh County Shouters, a traditional performance group of the Gullah ethnic group, based in the town of Eulonia.

In 1793, McIntosh County was formed from Liberty, and the seat of government was established at Sapelo Bridge.
Sapelo, McIntosh County's barrier island off the coast, fronting on the Atlantic Ocean and bounded on its west by marshes and a network of tidal rivers and creeks, has a history as interesting and as diverse as that of the mainland.
Spalding served in the Georgia legislature, representing McIntosh County, for a number of years, and was also a U.S. congressman for a term until 1806, after which he returned to coastal Georgia for good to develop his properties on Sapelo, Creighton and Black islands.

 General Lachlan McIntosh
Born in Scotland, Lachlan McIntosh was the son of the head of the McIntosh clan.
McIntosh was selected as a delegate from the parish of St. Andrew for the Provincial Congress in 1775, held in Savannah.
McIntosh returned to Fort Pitt and remained in command until May 18, 1779 when he was ordered south to participate in a campaign to recapture Savannah.

Georgia's 18th county was named for the McIntosh family -- particularly Capt. John McIntosh (who in 1736 led a group of Scot Highlanders in the settlement of Darien) and his son Gen. Lachlan McIntosh (who was a hero of the American Revolution).
County Seat: The first Europeans to occupy the locality were Spanish missionaries who settled the Santo Domingo de Talaje mission at or near the site of Darien near the mouth of the Altamaha River.
Some McIntosh residents sought to have the county seat moved to a more central location, and in 1866 the General Assembly directed that an election be held.

In his sugar house McIntosh installed what was, according to Thomas Spalding*, the first horizontal cane mill worked by cattle power.
McIntosh, born in 1773 in what is now McIntosh County (Georgia), settled in East Florida as a young man and became the leader of a group of American citizens who, during the War of 1812, plotted the annexation of East Florida to the United States.
After McIntosh's death in 1836, New Canaan was sold to one Col. Hallowes, who changed the name of the plantation to Bollingbrook and lived there until after the Civil War.

GEORGIA WATERFOWL CONSERVATION STAMP is required for hunting waterfowl, except for hunters with a valid honorary license or children under the age of 16.

The judge was releasing this prisoner but let him know repeatedly that he was banished from McIntosh County and Darien Georgia; he even went so far as to tell this man that he could not go through the county by way of I-95, that he would have to find an alternate route.
The judge told us in a nasty tone, that the Georgia law was not as written he said just because we have such information does that make the law right.

In 1999, I was a new resident of Darien (county seat of McIntosh County), Georgia, USA.
The original name of our town was, in fact, New Inverness, until it was later changed in memory of the ill-fated Scottish expedition to the Darien Isthmus, Panama; in 1697.
During the town's 250th Anniversary in 1987, it was noted that more than 200 descendants of the original Scottish Highland settlers still reside in McIntosh County.

In January of 1736, the first group of immigrants arrived in the British Colony of Georgia to settle along the Altamaha River, in a town christened New Inverness.
This was a short lived statute, by 1748 slavery was introduced to the area.
On 19 December 1793, the county of McIntosh was formally created from parts of Liberty, and was named in honor of one of the early immigrant families, the Clan Mackintosh.
