McKenzie dories are specialized to run rapids on rivers, and first appeared on the McKenzie River in Oregon in the mid-20th century.
Unlike the McKenzie boats, the Rogue River dories are completely flat on the bottom with upward rakes under the prow and the stern.
River dories are mainly used by fishermen who wish for more control of their boat than that which a rubber raft provides.

The McKenzie River is a tributary of the Willamette River, 86 mi (138 km) long, in northwestern Oregon in the United States.
The main branch rises in the northeast corner of Lane County, near the Three Sisters and flows west past McKenzie Bridge for approximately 25 mi (40 km) to where it receives the South Fork approximately 3 mi (5 km) east of Blue River.
The McKenzie River is also home of the McKenzie River Drift Boat.
