At that time McMaster had no full-fledged engineering program of its own but did have a "treaty" with Queen's whereby its qualifying students would be admitted to the second year of the latter's Faculty of Applied Science.
McMaster was his first stop after high school just as it had been his sister Jeannette's the year before.
He satisfactorily finished the year with a mixture of seconds and thirds and in September 1939 was duly admitted to the Queen's program.

Booth credits the inspiration from the McMaster’s first dean of engineering, Jack Hodgins and professor Jim Siddall as his mentors.
McMaster alumnus and successful entrepreneur, Walter Booth gave a gift to support a chair in Engineering Entrepreneurship and Innovation because he wanted to give back to McMaster as a thank you for the success he experienced after graduating with a B.Eng.

In 1996, the Senate of McMaster University established the new title of University Professor; in April of that year, he was appointed the first University Professor from the Faculty of Engineering.
From 1996 to 2001 he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Tarbiat Modares University, Tehran, Iran, and also an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran.

He obtained his undergraduate degree in Forest Engineering in 1937 and his doctorate in Forestry in 1954, the year he was named dean of the Faculty of Forestry at the University of Sopron.
Richard has received honorary degrees from Wilfrid Laurier University and McMaster University, and was awarded the Centennial Medal of Canada in 1967.
Appointed to UBC as a faculty member in 1960, he went on to serve as head of the Political Science department from 1973 to 1980, and continued as a faculty member until his retirement from university in 1995.

 NSERC - $3.75 million for Canadian Universities to hire women - Seven new faculty positions awarded in national competition
May 6, 1999 - (Ottawa, Ontario) - Dr. Ronald Duhamel, Secretary of State (Science, Research and Development), today announced that seven young women will receive University Faculty Awards as a result of the new funding provided to NSERC (the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council) in this year's federal budget.
"I can't think of better role models for women undergraduate and graduate students considering research careers." Dr. Frize, Dr. Duhamel and Dr. Brzustowski were speaking at the annual meeting of the five regional Chairs for Women in Science and Engineering.
The women will be hired by Carleton, Dalhousie, McMaster and York Universities and the Université de Montréal.

He returned to his beloved Canada and Ontario, whose heart the Mulroney and Harris governments have succeeded in tearing out (apologies to the late Phil Ochs), and joined McMaster's faculty, serving a term as Associate Chair of Mathematics and Statistics.
He has held research grants in the United States from the National Science Foundation, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Department of Energy, and the Alfred Sloan Foundation, and in Canada from Employment and Immigration Canada, Canada Council, Canadian Mathematics Congress, National Research Council, Medical Research Council, and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council.
Professor Fred lives near the Bruce Trail in Dundas, Ontario, beneath the Niagara Escarpment, with his wife Marla and children Daniel and Tamara.
