McMenamins beer is good, but there’s a lot of good beer around; the same goes for the food.
No project better embodies the McMenamins’ approach than the revival of the old Olympic Club in blue-collar Centralia, Wash. It was 1993, and Mike was driving to Seattle for the opening of a pub when he decided to stop off at one of his favorite "oddball" spots, Richart’s Ruins.
McMenamin wandered up the block to talk to a lawyer, drove to Seattle—"with a big smile on my face," he says—and two weeks later owned the 85-year-old Olympic Club plus an adjoining flophouse, the Oxford Hotel.

At a public meeting on Whidbey Island yesterday, state parks commissioners voted unanimously to accept McMenamins' proposal to build a hotel, restaurant and conference center in the abandoned building, but stopped short of authorizing a lease agreement after hearing an hour of opposing testimony.
While the commissioners did not sign a binding agreement with McMenamins, the decision to invite private investment in the park worries some citizens who frequent the trails, swimming pool and gymnasium.
McMenamins intends to restore the 90,000-square-foot building, turn the bottom floors into a conference center and the top floors into a hotel.

Mike McMenamin's father, Robert, is currently a trustee on the $700,000 Wentworth Foundation, which doled out $28,000 in 1997 to groups including the Boy Scouts, Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon, OPB and the Society of Jesuits.
The new brewpub formula was possible because a group of brewers including the McMenamin brothers had worked the Legislature in 1985 to draft a law that would allow brewers to sell their beer on site and supply that beer to one other pub.

It's not as great as some McMenamins I've been to in Portland, but the beer is still tasty.
