  McMichael Canadian Art Collection
With a collection comprising over 5000 works (more than 70% of which were donated by private collectors), the McMichael includes paintings by Tom THOMSON and the GROUP OF SEVEN and their contemporaries.
For several years the McMichaels regularly opened their house and art collection to the public on weekends, but as larger and larger crowds appeared on their doorstep each weekend, they began to investigate ways to make the gallery permanently accessible to the public.
In 1965, following lengthy negotiations with the Province of Ontario, the McMichaels gave their home, property and collection of 177 paintings to the government, which agreed to ensure that the buildings and grounds would be maintained and that the spirit of the collection would be retained for all time.

The art collection, now known as the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, was to display distinctively Canadian art reflecting the cultural heritage of Canada and the images and the spirit of the nation, focusing on those artists known as the Group of Seven and their contemporaries.
Robert and Signe McMichael had a vision that the gallery and the art collection that it housed would continue to retain the spirit that they had originally created by remaining true to its focus on those artists who had celebrated the nation's beauty in a uniquely Canadian way.

The McMichael Canadian Art Collection is located in splendid surroundings, but a visitor to Toronto and to Canada can see fine examples of the Group of Seven and their peers in other galleries, such as the Art Gallery of Ontario and the National Gallery, without traveling outside the urban area.
This collection is made up of much more than the donation of a couple, who, by the way I think need to be applauded for what they have initiated, but I believe they have received more than their fair share of benefits from the state for the contributions they have made.

From June 1 to September 2, 2002, the McMichael Canadian Art Collection’s summer offering, Call of the Wild, explores the theme of nature and wildlife through a series of related exhibitions, and examines how it has shaped Canada’s art, culture and heritage.
Call of the Wild is organized around three complementary installations that create a framework from which to view wildlife art, understand its contemporary roots and provide a context for Carl Rungius (1869-1959), the German-born man who became one of the most important North American Wildlife artists of the 20th century.
Through an unusual collection of contemporary art and archival material drawn from the McMichael’s collection, as well as the Royal Ontario Museum, Whyte Museum in the Canadian Rockies, the National Archives and Robert McLaughlin Gallery, the changing nature of this category is examined.
