New McNary Dam turbines could boost power, protect fish
After nearly 50 years of constant use, the turbines at McNary Dam are being studied for total replacement during a 13-year powerhouse overhaul.
The McNary makeover comes out of a broad-scale analysis by federal agencies on ways to improve hydropower operations at a dam that has substantially less power production capacity than similar federal projects on the lower Columbia River.
In the 45 years since the last of McNary's 14 turbines was installed, there's been no significant investments to improve the dam's generation efficiency.
