 Guardian Unlimited Arts reviews Rigoletto
When David McVicar's production of Rigoletto opened last year, it was greeted by squawks of protest in certain illiberal circles.
Rigoletto, swirling about on crutches after the fashion of Anthony Sher's Richard III and decked out in a fetishistic leather carapace, looks like a monstrous parasitic insect.
Rigoletto is played by Carlos Alvarez, handsome enough to be plausibly suspected of keeping a mistress, and vocally gritty.

 Amazon.co.uk: Verdi: Rigoletto [2002]: DVD
One of the principal reasons is McVicar's decision to emphasise the tyrannical nature of the Duke (beautifully sung by Marcelo Alvarez), and the appalling social injustice that springs from a corrupt leader: his court is a place of physical and sexual abuse (graphically, but by no means gratuitously, depicted).
On the DVD Rigoletto comes with an entertaining 17-minute BBC biography of the composer, "Verdi Through the Looking Glass", presented by conductor Charles Hazlewood, as well as an illustrated synopsis of the opera, and a revealing 10-minute interview with the director.
Michael Vale's set is a masterpiece of economy--both the Duke's palace and Rigoletto's home are surrounded by broken objects, wire fencing and gloomy shadows--and Edward Downes draws some stunning playing from the Royal Opera Orchestra.

 VH1.com : Roger Daltrey : Biography
During the Who's post-Keith Moon era, Daltrey co-produced and starred in the film McVicar, a biography of train robber John McVicar; members of the Who appeared on its soundtrack, which essentially served as a full-fledged Daltrey album and found him bridging the gap between hard rock and the pop songs of his earlier solo work.
In addition to the Who's 1989 reunion tour, Daltrey has since continued to act in occasional television and film roles, as well as releasing the solo album Rocks in the Head in 1992.
Over time, Daltrey developed into one of rock's most powerful lead vocalists, a position to which he staked his claim on the Who's 1971 masterpiece Who's Next; his onstage persona was one of macho swagger, accompanied by such antics as twirling his microphone like a lasso.

McVicar - Roger Daltrey, Adam Faith, Cheryl Campbell, Billy Murray, Georgina Hale, Steven Berkoff, Tom Clegg - 1980
Thanks also to the sterling direction of Tom Clegg, who brought a real sense of realism to the film thanks to his background of directing TV episodes of THE SWEENEY and a first rate supporting cast (The late Adam Faith, Steven Berkoff, Cheryl Campbell), MCVICAR is well worth a look.
The concept of pop star as actor is frowned upon and indeed, with the failure of GIGLI and SWEPT AWAY, it is a concept that will ocntinue to be embraced by film fans who won't allow cinema to be undermined by people who think they have more talent than they can spare.
As with the best prison films, which paint a balance of cell life with none of the cuteness that occasionally occured with shows like PORRIDGE, although the representation of prison life was reasonable, there are no punches pulled.
