Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet model airplane
The remarkable Komet (comet) rocket-powered interceptor fighter was developed from the designs of Dr. Alexander Lippisch who, for many years, had been working on tailless sailplane designs.
This proved ineffective, for the closing speed of the two airplanes of about 808 mph meant that the slow-firing MK 108 cannon could be fired for only three seconds before the pilot had to break off his attack.
The Me 163B-1a was powered by one 3,750-lb thrust Walter HWK 509A-2 rocket motor, giving the airplane a maximum speed of 596 mph at 32,810 feet, service ceiling of 39,700 feet, and a maximum powered endurance 7 minutes 30 seconds.
