He told me that it was a great luck for foreign airforce that Hitler himself retarted the introduction of the M-262 as an fighter plane because he was complete layman and thought it would be good for a bomber.
The aircraft was originally designed as a tail-dragger and the first (Me 262 V1) through fourth (-V4) prototypes flew with this configuration, but it was discovered on an early test run that the engines and wings "blanked" the stabilizers, giving almost no control on the ground.
Due to fuel shortages, pilot shortages, and the lack of many airfields that could support the Me 262 (concrete runways were recommended as the jet engines would melt tar runways), as few as 200 Me 262s made it to combat units.

Messerschmitt Me 262 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although the Me 262 had a negligible impact on the course of the war—shooting down an estimated 150 Allied aircraft for the loss of 100 Me 262s, the majority of aircraft grounded for lack of fuel—the jet was both well-known and highly influential on post-war aircraft development.
The HG series of Me 262 derivatives was estimated to be capable of reaching transonic Mach numbers in level flight, with the top speed of the HG III being projected as Mach 0.96 at 6 km altitude.
After Willy Messerschmitt's death, the former Me 262 pilot Hans Guido Mutke claimed to be the first person to break the sound barrier on April 9, 1945 in a Me 262.

In these dive tests, it was established that the Me 262 was out of control in a dive at (Austrian physicist and philosopher who introduced the Mach number and who founded logical positivism (1838-1916)) Mach 0.86, and that higher Mach numbers would lead to a nose-down trim that could not be countered by the pilot.

Thus was the birth of the Me 262.
It was realized that the Me 262 needed to have a tricycle landing gear, both to solve the takeoff problem and to save the runways which were becoming badly scorched.
As a dive bomber, the 262 would exceed its maximum speed, as a low level bomber it consumed too much fuel thus unacceptably reducing range, and as a high level bomber without an appropriate bomb sight the pilot would be lucky to hit within the same zip code of the target.

 FlightSim.Com Feature: Great Airplanes 4: Messerschmitt 262
The Me 262 might seem a strange choice because it wasn't the first jet powered plane to fly; nor, fortunately for the Allies, was it produced in particularly large numbers.
Allied aviators reported encounters with the Me 262 in awed tones, but it wasn't that long before it was proved that shooting one down was possible, the trick being to catch the jet as it slowed in an evasive maneuver, or as the 262 was throttled back to avoid overhauling a target.
As Galland's comment indicates, the Me 262 was a pilot's airplane that was docile in normal flight regimes with well harmonized controls and packing a terrific punch thanks to the four 30 mm cannon with which it was equipped.

 Me 262, Messerschmitt
Being the first jet fighter to enter operational service, the design of the Messerschmitt Me 262 stemmed from a previous 1938 requirement from the German Air Ministry, for a plane to be powered by the new BMW gas turbine engines.
Contrary to Hitler's orders, the Me 262 was exclusively produced as a fighter but when this was discovered by the Führer, an immediate conversion of all planes was ordered, thus ending all hopes of repelling the punishing Allied bombing raids for the sake of dropping one or two bombs.
The Me 262 was argued to be an excellent opportunity to inflict serious damage to the Allied bomber formations as it had already produced superb results against Allied aircraft and it used diesel fuel which was in less demand compared with the high-octane fuel used by propeller driven aircraft.

Aviation historians say if the Me 262 had been used early as a fighter in mass numbers, it could have turned the tide of the air war in favor of Germany.
As a fighter, the Me 262 was deadly, slicing through Allied bomber formations at about 540 mph, or 100 mph faster than any fighter with a propeller could fly at the time.

Despite being well-armed with 30-mm cannons and air-to-air rockets, the Me 262 was simply too little too late to turn the tide of war in Germany's favor.

Czypionka told me that because they were flying solo aircraft and knew that any throttle motions were very critical for avoiding flameouts at high altitude, they maintained a constant throttle setting and didn't have any problem in that area.
The Me 262 was changed from a tail-dragger to a tricycle configuration because when the tail was low, the wing's angle of incidence rendered the tailplane ineffective, and that made the elevators unresponsive to control inputs.

 Warbird Alley: Messerschmitt Me 262
For a single nation to twice take on the modern world within a 20-year period, there must be a high level of self-delusion, if not madness, in the highest ranks of government, especially when it was still staggering from the effects of losing the first try.
None-the-less, Nazi Germany did exactly that, and no amount of technological ingenuity could alter that fact, as the history of the Messerschmitt Me 262, the first turbojet to be used in combat, dramatically illustrates.
Despite the fact that the Me 262 is one of the most rare and esoteric aircraft of World War II, at least one group has endeavored to build brand new copies of this interesting airplane, updated to modern safety standards, and powered by more modern jet engines.
