		The genesis of the Me 323 Gigant (giant) transport was in a 1940 German requirement for a large assault glider.
		Compared to the Me 321, the Me 323 had a much-reduced payload of between 10—12 tonnes, which was the price that had to be paid for an aircraft that could operate autonomously.
		The Me 323 was also a short-range aircraft, with a typical range (loaded) of 1,000—1,200 km.

		To make the Me 323 fit for cheap mass production, it had been designed with a fabric-covered steel tube framing instead of a conventional light-alloy monocoque structure.
		Inititally, it was planned to power the Me 323 with four engines, but flight testing a prototype showed that six engines were necessary to achieve the desired load-carrying capability.
		Capable of carrying 100 troops or a similar freight load, the Me 323 was used in 1943 to ferry supplies and reserve troops from Italy and Sicily to the German Armies in North Africa.

		In December 1940, the RLM had decided to change the designation of the Messerschniitt glider from Me 263 to Me 321, and thus it was as the Me 321 V1 that the first Gigant began its test program at Leipheim.
		The crew of the Me 321B-1 was increased from five to six members by the addition of a co-pilot, the other personnel comprising a radio operator, a loading officer and two gunners.
		The distance involved proved, in the event, to be too great for the He 1hZ towing a fully-laden Me 321, and as no suitable intermediate landing fields were available the operation had to be cancelled.

		This massive glider with a fifty-five meter or approximately one hundred and sixty-five foot wing span was conceived by the Luftwaffe in 1941 in anticipation of Hitler's invasion of Britain, Operation Sea Lion.
		To make full use of the Gigant's massive cargo space, tanks could be loaded through the eleven foot tall clam-shell nose doors, six Gnome-Rhone engines were stolen from occupied France and fitted on the wings of each Gigant effectively turning the ME 321 into the ME 323.

		That Me 323 (from old man story) was shot down by Sgt. Grecu (with IAR 80) near Arges river i don't remember the village name (it start with P...) probably close to Boteni.
		On 27 august'44 one Me323 was shot and forced to land south of Patroaia village (near Arges river) by a flight (of IAR 81) from Gr2Vt and was set on fire by Sgt Grecu Gheorghe from Gr4Vt (with IAR 81 nr 394).

		Here is a picture of the fuselage front, without the clam shell nose pieces, but with the plugs for the landing gear covers, and the cockpit.
		These plugs will be used to make molds, and thus allow me to reproduce fiberglass parts.
