MeNZB - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
MeNZB is a vaccine against a specific strain of group B meningococcus, currently being used to control an epidemic of meningococcal disease in New Zealand.
There are no live meningococcal bacteria in the vaccine and it is not possible to catch the disease or become a carrier of the disease from the vaccine.
The antigen in MeNZB is prepared from B:4:P1.7b,4 (NZ 98/254) N. meningitidis strain, grown in a fermentor.

 Data Sheet
MeNZB is indicated for primary immunisation against group B meningococci with the P1.7-b,4* PorA protein ("New Zealand strain").
The population at risk should be vaccinated with MeNZB to prevent serious systemic disease (septicaemia and meningitis) caused by New Zealand strain serogroup B meningococci.
MeNZB is presented as a 0.5 ml suspension for injection in a colourless single dose Type I glass vial closed with bromobutyl rubber stoppers.

MeNZB™ is given by intramuscular injection with the course of immunisations comprising three doses given at 6-week intervals.
Phase I and Phase II clinical trials of MeNZB™ vaccine are being led by the University of Auckland, under contract to the Ministry of Health.
MeNZB™ is being given with the routine childhood immunisation schedule to assess immunogenicity and safety in that age group, and interference with the immune response to routine childhood immunisations (DTaP-IPV and Hib-HepB at 6 weeks and 3 months, and DTaP-IPV and HepB at 5 months).

A vaccination schedule of 3 doses MeNZB given with an interval of 6 weeks between doses induces a humoral immune response against the New Zealand strain.
Data from trials using a vaccination schedule of 3 doses MeNZB given with an interval of 6 weeks demonstrate that 74% infants, 75% toddlers, 74% children, and 91% adults developed a 4-fold rise (compared with pre-vaccination values) in serum bactericidal antibody titres 4-6 weeks after the third dose.

Immunoblogging: MeNZB and Phase III trials
Firstly, there are in fact several vaccines that are similar to MeNZB being used at the moment, including the 'parent' vaccine that MeNZB was based on that was developed in Norway.
The only considerable difference between the Norweigan vaccine and MeNZB is the antigen (the bit the immune system responds to in the vaccine) is different: the two vaccines were produced in the same way.
Conceptually, there is little difference between the concept behind the MeNZB vaccine and changing the antigens in the influenza vaccine every year except that certain groups complain about one and not the other.

This follows medicines regulator Medsafe granting approval for a 4th dose of the vaccine to be administered to babies, the age group at greatest risk from the country's group B meningococcal epidemic.
Additional data, from extension studies, on the administration of a 4th MeNZB vaccine showed a clear increase in response rate (four-fold rise) as would be expected with a primary course that consists of four doses in the first year of life.
The 4th MeNZB dose should be given to babies at least 10 months old, and a minimum of four months after their 3rd dose.

The MOH funded studies show that carriage of meningococcal bacteria in about 20 percent of the population at any one time is not affected by the MeNZB™ vaccine and therefore herd protection is most unlikely.
