Mason County was organized by an act of the legislature at a session in Lansing on January 3, 1855.
This was a natural division of the territory made by the three rivers of the county, then the only possible highways of travel away from the shore of Lake Michigan.
Pere Marquette Township took in the tier of townships through which the Pere Marquette River runs, and all of the county lying between the river and Oceana County.

I am most grateful to the Masons and Mason descendants who so quickly and interestedly replied to my queries, and particularly to those who not only sent their own data but gave me much valuable information on other lines, and countless regrets for the many letters I sent and which were not accorded a reply.
Hugh Mason, the progenitor of the family, born in England, in 1606, stands out as a most picturesque personality in the scanty records of the day, even among the strong and vigorous characters who were his associates in the colonies.
Mason and his wife are buried in the Arlington Street cemetery in Watertown, and now (1934) the stones marking their graves are in perfect condition and The Massachusetts Society of Colonial Wars has placed a marker at his grave.

The State of South Dakota, Mellette and Todd Counties challenged whether the Isolated Tracts Act mandated that the land be acquired in trust and the Interior Board of Indian Appeals (IBIA) affirmed the BIA's interpretation of the Act as mandatory.
The Act was construed by the Board in State of Iowa and Board of Supervisors of Pottawattamie County, Iowa v.
Great Plains Regional Director, Bureau of Indian Affairs, 38 IBIA 42 (2002) and upheld the BIA's interpretation that the Act permitted the BIA to acquire lands for the Tribe under either the mandatory acquisition authority in the Act or pursuant to section 465 of the IRA.
