  Mean Cell Volume (MCV)
The mean cell volume indicates the volume of the "average" red cell in a sample.
Advia also provides a histogram, although red blood cell volume is determined from the amount of low angle light scatter as the cells pass through a laser beam.
In this cytogram, hemoglobin concentration is plotted on the X-axis and cell volume is plotted on the Y-axis.

 Sickle cell and African-Americans
Sickle cell disease is a generic term for a group of genetic disorders characterized by the predominance of hemoglobin S (Hb S).
These disorders include sickle cell anemia, the sickle beta thalassemia syndromes, and hemoglobinopathies in which Hb S is in association with another abnormal hemoglobin that not only can participate in the formation of hemoglobin polymers but also is present in sufficient concentration to enable the red cells to sickle.
Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) is definitely decreased in thalassemia syndromes and is somewhat decreased in S HPFH.

The ratio of the volume of red cells to the volume of whole blood.
This is a calculated volume derived from the hemoglobin measurement and the hematocrit.

The hemoglobin concentration is probably the most accurate (and the red cell count the least accurate) of the three analytes needed to calculate the red cell indices.
The packed cell volume is the number derived from packing red cells by centrifugation in a glass tube.
Histograms of red cell volume distribution is a relatively new measurement allowing visualization of erythrocyte volume variability.

Method and apparatus for measuring mean cell volume of red blood cells - Patent 4453266
The apparatus includes means for generating signals repesentative of the area of the cells and means for measuring the optical density of the individual cells and for generating signals representative of the hemoglobin content or mass of the cells.
means for examining the central pallors of the red blood cells and determining the mean cell volume for a subpopulation of cells having central pallors by using the central pallor measurement as a negative indentation value.
A further object of the invention is to determine the mean cell volume of a total population or of a particular subpopulation of red blood cells.

BioMed Central | Full text | Enumeration of leukocyte infiltration in solid tumors by confocal laser scanning microscopy
The total antigen volume in the scanned tissue was calculated and divided by the mean cell volume (calculated by "seeding" ten individual cells) to obtain the cell count.
At all levels of cell infiltration the cell count remained relatively constant, because the same threshold was used to calculate the total antigen volume and the individual cell volume.
The relatively constant relationship between threshold and calculated cell number is further illustrated in figure 2, which shows the effect of threshold (removal of grey scales between 1 and 10) on the resulting cell counts (cell number (bar) and SD (whisker) for the high cell infiltration image stack.

Mean cell volume definition - Medical Dictionary definitions of popular medical terms
Mean cell volume: A standard part of the complete blood count, the mean cell volume (MCV) is the average volume of a red blood cell.
This is a calculated value derived from the hematocrit and the red cell count (The hematocrit is the ratio of the volume of red cells to the volume of whole blood while the red cell count is the number of red blood cells in a volume of blood).
The normal range for the mean cell volume is 86 - 98 femtoliters.

 Red Cell Indices
Using the results of the red blood cell (RBC) count, hematocrit, and total hemoglobin tests, red cell indices (erythrocyte indices) provide important information about the size, hemoglobin concentration, and hemoglobin weight of an average RBC.
MCV, the ratio of hematocrit (packed cell volume) to the RBC count, expresses the average size of the erythrocytes and indicates whether they are undersized (microcytic), oversized (macrocytic), or normal (normocytic).
Because MCV reflects the average volume of many cells, a value within the normal range can encompass RBCs of varying size, from microcytic to macrocytic.

The Coulter Principle states that the pulse is directly proportional to the tri-dimensional volume of the particle that produced it.
In addition, a metering device is used to draw a known volume of the particle suspension through the aperture; a count of the number of pulses can then yield the concentration of particles in the sample.
Traditionally volume % size distribution is used to characterize powders because the results are comparable to sieve results, an old technology used for many years.
