The term asteroid is generally used to indicate a diverse group of small celestial bodies that drift in the solar system in orbit around the Sun.
Although the IAU subsequently banned pet names as sources, eccentric asteroid names are still being proposed and accepted, such as 4321 Zero, 6042 Cheshirecat, 9007 James Bond, 13579 Allodd, 24680 Alleven, or 26858 Misterrogers.
It has been suggested that asteroids might be used in the future as a source of materials which may be rare or exhausted on earth (asteroid mining), or materials for constructing space habitats (see Colonization of the asteroids).

Most asteroids are believed to be remnants of the protoplanetary disc which were not incorporated into planets during the system's formation due to excessive gravitational perturbations by Jupiter.
As of November 16, 2005, from a total of 305,224 minor planets with calculated orbits, 120,437 asteroids had been calculated well enough to be given official numbers and 12,712 of these had been officially given trivial names to go along with the numbers (at least 610 of which have names requiring diacritics).

In the philosophy of language, there are various theories about the meaning of words and sentences; for example, that a meaningful proposition must be possible to check (verifiability).
Perhaps the most influential theory of meaning is German philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein's use theory, which states that the meaning of a word or expression is to be found in its use.
For Wittgenstein, the meaning of a word or sentence is not subjective and private but public, because it requires social conventions for its use.

The orbit of Pallas is highly inclined to the plane of the main asteroid belt at 34.8°, and the orbital eccentricity is nearly as large as Pluto's.
The asteroid is named after Pallas Athena, an alternate name for the goddess Athena.
This means that, every palladian summer and winter, large parts of the surface are in constant sunlight or constant darkness for a time of the order of an Earth year.

 Asteroid Summary
It is thought that asteroids are remnants of the protoplanetary disc, and in this region the incorporation of protoplanetary remnants into the planets was prevented by large gravitational perturbations induced by Jupiter during the formative period of the solar system.
Moreover, depictions of the Asteroid Belt as The New Frontier clearly draw (sometimes explicitly) on the considerable literature of the Nineteenth-Century Frontier and the Wild West.
And since (in nearly all stories) the asteroids are completely lifeless until the arrival of the humans, it is a New Frontier completely free of the moral taint of the brutal dispossession of the Native Americans in the original.

A newly discovered asteroid is given a provisional designation consisting of the year of discovery and an alphanumeric code (such as).
On rare occasions, an asteroid's provisional designation may become used as a name in itself: the still unnamed gave its name to a group of asteroids which became known as cubewanos.
A particular exception to this rule is 96747 Crespodasilva, which was named after its discoverer, Lucy d'Escoffier Crespo da Silva, because she sadly died shortly after the discovery, at age 22.

The observer of the first apparition with a calculated orbit is declared the discoverer, and he gets the honor of naming the asteroid (subject to the approval of the International Astronomical Union) once it is numbered.
Sources for namesThe first few asteroids were named after figures from Graeco-Roman mythology, but as such names started to run out, others were used - famous people, literary characters, the names of the discoverer's wives, children, and even television characters.
Ida, like Gaspra, is an S-type asteroid, meaning that it is a reddish object composed of a mixture of the minerals pyroxene, olivine, and iron.

The asteroid America was discovered in 1915 by a Russian astronomer, and the asteroid Hel (one l) was named in 1921 by the discoverer's widow for the Norse goddess of the underworld.
The names for asteroids, first of all, are given by astronomers, and usually the astronomer who discovered the asteroid.

Asteroid - Article from FactBug.org - the fast Wikipedia mirror site
Most asteroids are believed to be remnants of the protoplanetary disc which were not incorporated into planets during the system's formation.
The vast majority of the asteroids are within the asteroid belt, with elliptical orbits between those of Mars and Jupiter.
The term "asteroid", meaning star-like (from the Greek asteroeides, aster "star" + -eidos "form, shape"), was coined in 1802 by Sir William Herschel shortly after Olbers discovered the second one, 2 Pallas, in late March of the same year, to describe their star-like appearance; the other then-known planets all show discs, by comparison.

Most comets are believed to originate in a cloud (the Oort cloud) at large distances from the Sun consisting of debris left over from the condensation of the solar nebula; the outer edges of such nebulae are cool enough that water exists in a solid (rather than gaseous) state.
Asteroids originate via a different process, but very old comets which have lost all their volatile materials may come to resemble asteroids.
Later, periodic comets were usually named after their discoverers, but comets that had appeared only once continued to be referred to by the year of their apparition.

But when the number of asteroids began to exceed the goddesses, names were chosen to honor colleagues and historical figures of both genders, as well as flowers, cities, mountains, lakes, nations and ideas.
Because they are so small and so abundant, asteroids can focus upon explicit relationships between people, places and things; they simply identify the name of the who, the name of the place, the name of the what, and when these names connect.
Asteroid names just might carry a relation to sounds, vibrations, and frequencies triggering the naming by the astronomer, and prompting parents to name children, and events with the names to suddenly "come together." When the musical group Peter Paul and Mary first performed, the three asteroids with those names were conjunct in the constellation Leo!

 Oort cloud
The Oort cloud is thought to be a remnant of the original solar nebula that collapsed to form the Sun and planets approximately 4.6 billion years ago, and is loosely bound to the solar system.
The most widely-accepted hypothesis of its formation is that the Oort cloud's objects initially formed much closer to the Sun as part of the same process that formed the planets and asteroids, but that gravitational interaction with young gas giants such as Jupiter ejected them into extremely long elliptical or parabolic orbits.
If Sedna indeed belongs to the Oort cloud, this may mean that the Oort cloud is both denser and closer to the Sun than previously thought.

Cruithne - Earth's Kid Sister? - Astrology in the Age of Aquarius
There are many thousands of asteroids in orbit around the Sun, ranging in size from small spherical planetoids a few hundred miles in diameter to tiny and irregular lumps of rock.
The first asteroids were discovered 200 years ago, and they moved around the Sun in orbits between those of Mars and Jupiter.
While some astronomers believe that the asteroids originate from a planet that broke up into small pieces, perhaps due to the presence of the massive Jupiter, most authorities currently suggest that Jupiter's mass prevented a planet from forming in the first place in the region between Mars and Jupiter.

The Portuguese found it uninhabited, imported livestock, fruit trees and vegetables, built a chapel and one or two houses, and left their sick there to be taken home, if recovered, by the next ship, but they formed no permanent settlement.
