 Encyclopedia of Arda: Mearas
These were the Mearas, noble horses that lived as long as a Man, and had extraordinary strength and intelligence.
Throughout their history, they would only allow themselves to be ridden by the Lord of the Mark or his sons.
This long tradition was broken by Gandalf, who managed to train the greatest of the Mearas of his time, Shadowfax, and rode that mighty horse throughout the War of the Ring.

The line in the Trilogy where it states that the Lords of the Mark choose their horses from among the Mearas obviously implies that Snowmane is one such, but I have never seen where this is verified.
To my recollection, the word "Mearas" is only mentioned one time, in the movie, as Legolas first glimpses him running up, another case of a scripted "nod" to the Tolkienizzi, in lieu of justice to the character.

In 1992, to save you from the slaughterhouse, my mother bought you for me. a couple of months later, you had changed so much that you could not be recognized.....your eyes were so different and your head was held high.
Where you are, with the Mearas, I'm sure you gallop all the time and do as many tricks as you used to do with me..that's why I love you so much and I'll never forget you.
