RealEstateJournal | New York Groups Battle For Meatpacking District
At the heart of the district is Gansevoort Market, a triangular wedge abutting the West Side Highway and bounded by 14th St. to the north and the intersection of Gansevoort and Little West 12th streets to the south.
The meatpacking district is one of the last development frontiers in lower Manhattan and is poised for growth, especially once the district's predominantly industrial zoning is changed, as it almost certainly will be.
The task force is co-chaired by Florent Morellet and Jo Hamilton, a first hint that the meatpacking district may not require saving from a strictly economic standpoint: Morellet's Florent Restaurant, established in 1985, was one of the first to pioneer a neighborhood that is now white-hot.

In Manhattan’s Meatpacking District—in the midst of trendy restaurants likely to succumb to similar fates—there’s a glorious exception: Florent, a 21-year-old downtown institution.
The 75-seat bistro is a pure reflection of its owner, Florent Morellet, a native of France who settled in New York in 1978 and later decided he wanted a deliberately understated restaurant at a time when superdesigned eateries with Asian fusion or nouvelle cuisine themes were all the rage.
Morellet—an avid bicyclist who peddled all over Lower Manhattan in search of the perfect space—eventually found an old diner located in a neighborhood known then for cobblestone streets, hanging beef, notorious gay bars, and low-rise buildings.
