The first Mechagodzilla was created as a weapon of destruction by a race of ape-like aliens, sometimes known as Simeons or the Black Hole aliens(See: Alien races from the Godzilla films).
Mechagodzilla is capable of firing a rainbow coloured optical laser that seems to be equal in power to Godzilla's atomic breath- its head can rotate 360 degrees, allowing the robotic reptile to shoot down an opponent that might attempt to approach from behind.
Mechagodzilla was unleashed, but the cyborg's latent memories were reawakened by Godzilla's own roars.

Continuing after the end of Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (1974), Interpol agents, led by Inspector Kusakari (played by Masaaki Daimon), search for the wreck of Mechagodzilla underwater in the Akatsuki submarine to gather information on its builders, the aliens from Planet 3 in the Black Hole.
With the help of marine biologist Akira Ichinose (Katsuhiko Sasaki), they trace the incident and Titanosaurus to a reclusive, misanthropic scientist named Shinzô Mafune (Akihiko Hirata), who was forced to leave the institute, and wants to destroy them as well as all of mankind.
He was slated to direct Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla II (1993) but died early that year.

MechaGodzilla, first son of G-Force(well, second if you count Garuda), stares down his adversary: the fabled guardian of the universe, and renowned Gyaos hunter, Gamera.

And to be entirely fair, this is different because Mechagodzilla is under the control of alien apes disguised as humans, not alien cockroaches disguised as humans.
Conversely, Mechagodzilla looks like a pretty cherry ride and gives off that sense of a cool, calculating, monster-destroyer, since he's made out of shiny metal (I'd hate to be the one that has to wax that thing) and we all know robots are evil.
Mechagodzilla would prove his mettle by reappearing in a couple of more movies to take on Big G. The question is, do you have the mettle to take on Big G and those movies, too?

The special effects are a little better, the story moves a little quicker than Godzilla vs Gigan or Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla, and the whole production just seems classier, probably thanks to Godzilla director Inshiro Honda's return to the series after a long absence.
And while these aliens are smart enough to build a cool robot like MechaGodzilla, they put the controls for the robot into a human, despite their contempt for humans in general.
MechaGodzilla's rampage through Tokyo is suitably explosive, even if we do see the same building blow up twice in a row at one point.

And this version of Mechagodzilla engaged in plenty of tooth and nail brawling with his fully organic counterpart, rather than the near-constant back-and-forth barrage of beam weapons that we saw in the Heisei Era battle between these two old friends.
Also interesting was the fact that this time around, Mechagodzilla was actually a cyborg rather than a robot, as he was given a special connection to Godzilla outside of his phenotypical design…he actually had the "original" Godzilla's skeleton and DNA incorporated into his interior.
Nevertheless, with the return of Mechagodzilla in a satisfying fashion, this G-film commanded greater box office earnings than the last G-film, but not significantly so, and it was clear that the Millennium G-Series was in as much trouble in the early '00's as the Showa Series was in the early '70's.

The original Mechagodzilla, from the "Terror of Mechagodzilla," was a self-sustaining robot, however this latest version has to be powered and operated by an external group of technicians, including the AC3-White Heron aircraft, which is also responsible for air-lifting Mechagodzilla to its' destination.
While all of this is taking place, a brilliant young MASER operator named Akane (a member of the AMF) struggles to cope with the fact that her actions (or lack thereof), probably caused the death of a number of her colleagues during the 1999 attack by Godzilla.
The special effects in the movie are amazing (I especially enjoyed the smoke trail of the missiles fired by Mechagodzilla) and the CGI images are kept to a minimum (I still prefer the Godzilla characters in the rubber suits).

MechaGodzilla is as impressive as ever but is basically the same creature he was in the previous movie.
This is not to say that this is a bad movie; it is in fact better than most of the original series of 15 films, and it is historically important because it is the last of those 15.

Past vehicles for Mechagodzilla had been notably lackluster and included Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, Terror Of Mechagodzilla (so putrid they took the next decade off from making any Godzilla movies at all) and 1993's Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, arguably the most painful of the three to sit through.
The title was Godzilla X Mechagodzilla and I knew that that meant we weren't in for any ordinary struggle against a bunch of aliens controlling some dumpy cyborg or this cartoony G Force with their model airplanes and silly arm patches.
Nothing beats seeing Godzilla and Mechagodzilla in a Mexican stand-off at either end of the screen amidst the ruins of some city or other while the musical score thumps about as loud as when Mechagodzilla gets a running start and rams into Godzilla resulting in a sizable monster heap.
