 Mecklenburg History
Mecklenburg came under the occupation of Prussia for a few years beginning in 1759, like many of the surrounding political units.
It was during this period that the two Mecklenburg Duchies were elevated to the status of Grand Duchies and the Dukes became Grand Dukes.
Emigration from Mecklenburg to the United States began in earnest in the early 1800's, accelerated through mid century and began slowing after the unification in 1871.

Lalor, Cyclopaedia of Political Science, V.2, Entry 304, MECKLENBURG: Library of Economics and Liberty
Mecklenburg was obliged to submit to the law of equality of religions decreed by the constitution of the empire.
But the forced connection of Mecklenburg with the tariff system of the empire has abolished the transit dues; it is true, however, that by the same act the grand duchies were relieved from various expenditures.
—Till 1867 the various religions did not enjoy the liberty which is granted them at present in most of the states of Europe Mecklenburgers who are not Lutherans, practiced their religion only by toleration, and it is well understood that Lutherans themselves can not change the least ceremony without the consent of "competent" authority.

 Historical Flags (Mecklenburg, Germany)
Mecklenburg-Schwerin was a coastal province and, as in the past, a civil ensign was adopted with the colours blue-white-red, which were the colours of Rostock — thus with a different origin with respect to the colours of the State flag.
So the flag for both Mecklenburgs was the blue-yellow-red (and it always had been so), while Mecklenburg-Schwerin had also a blue-white-red civil ensign which is the flag usually reproduced on old charts and books dealing with maritime flags.
