The Medal of Valor (Heb.: עיטור הגבורה) was instituted by the Law of Decorations in the Israel Defense Forces of 1970.
The Medal of Valor is awarded by the Minister of Defense, upon recommendation by the Chief of Staff, for an act of supreme heroism in combat in the face of the enemy, at the risk of life.
Wearers of the Medal of Valor are honored and often invited to attend official ceremonies.

Before the establishment of the Medal of Valor, there were no Federal awards to specifically acknowledge the bravery performed by public safety officers throughout the United States; police and firefighting departments typically award their members medals at a state or local government level.
The establishment of the Medal of Valor fills a huge void in the civilian decorations system of the United States, which was all the more timely given the catastrophe in New York three-and-a-half months later on September 11, 2001.
The medal is suspended on a silver gilt disc bearing a letter "V" surrounded by a wreath of laurels, which is in turn suspended on a neck ribbon, blue with white and red edge stripes (the national colours of the USA) and a gold centre stripe (symbolizing honor).

MEDAL OF VALOR: The Medal of Valor will be awarded to individuals that voluntarily risk their own life to an extraordinary degree in saving or attempting to save the life of another person, or voluntarily sacrificed themselves in a heroic manner for the benefit of others.
Valor Awards nominations must be received by the CSFA no later than June 30th to be included in the Valor Awards Ceremony at the conference of the respective year.

The House Judiciary Committee voted last week to approve a bill, H.R. 802, that would honor public safety officers for extraordinary performance of their duties with a national Medal of Valor.
Under the bill, which passed Thursday on a voice vote, the medal would be presented to as many as five officers each year by the President, on behalf of the Congress and the American people.
The new Medal of Valor itself would be of "appropriate design, with ribbons and appurtenances," and designed in conjunction with the Department of Defense Institute of Heraldry, according to the bill text.

(1) The governor is authorized to present, in the name of the people of Montana, a medal to be known as the Montana medal of valor, bearing a suitable inscription and ribbon, to any citizen of the state who displays extraordinary courage in a situation threatening the lives of one or more people.
