Australia's Parliament passed new laws Wednesday to allow more foreign investment and mergers in the country's media companies, in the first overhaul of ownership controls in the industry in more than 20 years.
Media laws introduced in 1985 bar foreign companies from controlling more than 15 percent of a television company and more than 25 percent of a newspaper publisher.
Media companies were already repositioning "in what will now become one of the biggest feeding frenzies on the Australian media landscape that we've witnessed," Garrett told Parliament.
