Media and France's Ongoing Struggle | PressEthic
Unfortunately, it seems that the media is a direct reflection of this imbalance in European society.
In a recent statement, by President Chirac, he acknowledged the lack of diversity in newsrooms and television and said “the media must better reflect the France of today”.
The news coverage of the riots in France was not extensive, and part of the reason lies in that the country’s media was not adequately prepared to cover the uprisings that occurred in the French suburbs.

Print Media in France - French Newspapers, Magazines
France's press is subsidized in one way or another by an estimated sum of more than $55 million annually.
For example, a journalist in France phones, cables, or telexes his story at half the ordinary rate, and newspapers are mailed to subscribers for only a fraction of the cost for other material of the same weight.
France has about 800 periodicals offering political and general features, 500 others that present general news, 2,000 technical publications, 200 for children and young people, 600 agricultural journals, 1,500 devoted to education and pedagogy, and 2,000 devoted to the legal, political, economic, and social sciences.

Politics Central: AL-DURA: THE TRIAL (PART ONE)
The media are quick to remind critics that error is human but apparently in France a media watch organization isn’t even free to express itself when it is not mistaken.
A France 2 official acknowledged in the presence of news director Arlette Chabot, whose honor is allegedly sullied by Philippe Karsenty, that the Palestinians regularly enact fake battle scenes, some of which are reported as news in Western media.
Enter the phlogiston theory of media integrity: the al-Dura outtakes are effectively composed of 27-minutes of staged scenes and one nugget of reality, a bit less than one minute by the clock, the “death” of Mohamed al Dura, the truth of which must not be contested.

Once again, the Ministry spokesman had to specify that France had sold no military equipment to Iraq since the summer of 1990 and that it was furthermore impossible for Roland 2s to have been manufactured in 2002, given the fact that they were not manufactured after 1993.

Wired 2.05: France's Jerry Lewis Media Policy
Blending hard bargaining with fabled Gallic arrogance, France successfully managed to carve itself a cultural exception to the GATT treaty that allows it to continue its policies of special quotas and taxes on foreign (i.e., American) movies and television shows.
By suckling the teat of government subsidy, French media artistes will undeniably be preserved - but at the terrific cost of being crippled in their ability to compete in the pop culture marketplace.
France's Jerry Lewis multimedia policy assures that - far from expanding French cultural reach - its media will be as ghettoized and appealing as, say, Euro Disneyland.
