Women media practitioners have generally expressed preference for self-regulation of media institutions, e.g., establishing codes of conduct on media’s portrayal of women, over state regulation that is deemed as a threat to freedom of expression and women’s rights.
Women’s groups share the observation that women media practitioners are not automatically gender-sensitive by virtue of their gender, and that feminist perspectives find space in the media not only because of women being in positions of editors or directors but because these women have a developed gender consciousness and feminist lens.
Despite existing media laws, policies, codes of ethics and guidelines, the majority in the media still violate women’s rights as evidenced by sexist treatment of news, insensitive handling of acts of violations against women, and the proliferation of pornographic publications and print and broadcast materials that peddle derogatory and sexualised images of women.

What do professional groups, researchers and studies say about homosexuality
Homosexual behavior was a criminal act in most states of the U.S. It was branded a sexual deviation by mental health professionals.
As of 2006, all of the professional organizations in the field state that homosexuality is a normal, natural, and fixed sexual orientation, with the exception of a small group, The National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality whose beliefs appear to be based on conservative Christian theology.
Probably the only studies of homosexuality that have a chance of being reliable would be those in which the researchers hold diverse opinions on the nature of sexual orientation.

This is typical for media to put emphasis on the American heroes rather than heroes of other cultures regardless of their contributions to the U.S. During the early years of our nation, Indians were portrayed as savages and beasts ultimately becoming the bad guy while the white man remained the good guy.
The media, whether it be radio, television, film, newspapers, theater or novels, may not be solely responsible for the misrepresentations of the Indians.
The current media should study their mistakes of the past, research current data, involve 20th century Indians and historians, and maintain an ethical approach to disseminating the message and information.

Media's portrayal of transgender individuals is increasing in frequency and intensity, and its representation of who we are as transfolk is generally inaccurate, sensationalized and damaging to the safety of our trans brothers and sisters.
With the number of trans (and other gender variant) people killed each year simply because of perception of their gender (which is not always entirely accurate), the media should be held responsible for promoting violence when they portray transfolk in a negative or inaccurate light.
Let's call media that portray transfolk in such ways and tell them: "Enough of your lies!" There are transpeople being killed because people believe these lies.

NIH Guide: THE IMPACT OF MEDIA ON ADOLESCENTS' SEXUAL BEHAVIOR
One concern is the extent to which frequent consumption of media with high levels of sexual content and low levels of portrayal of responsible sexual conduct is a causal influence on young people's subsequent sexual behavior, including the responsible use of protection from pregnancy and disease.
Although media in other developed nations may be as high in sexual content as that in the U.S., the sexual behaviors of their young people are often less risk- laden.
Furthermore, dealing with sensitive issues such as exposure to media that might be interpreted as sexually suggestive and working with individuals under the age of 18 create the need for thoughtful and comprehensive approaches to informed consent, which involve both the parent and the young person.

If groups are commonly known and identified in the public's mind by certain generic expressions, the media may use those terms even though that use may not be preferred by the minority group.

Cortes, professor emeritus of the University of California, Riverside, is calling to the reader’s attention how the media have a powerful impact on how children grow up viewing diversity.
“At times the media strive for truth, accuracy, and balance, while at other times they consciously distort for purposes of sensationalism, commercialism, and ideological message transmission…Yet despite the constant barrage of public criticism of the media curriculum---criticism often originating within or disseminated by the media themselves---much of media teaching remains hidden in one sense.
One of the most important reasons that the media is such a powerful force in forming how we think and feel and act about diversity is that they tend to tell us stories.

What the Southern Baptist Convention delegates have said with their vote for this boycott is that they don't want even one openly gay person on TV, they don't want us to be treated fairly in the workplace, and--after advocating that gay people be discriminate against throughout society--they don't even want us going to Disneyland.
