Mediaset chairman: Bill is 'devastating' - Boston.com
Mediaset SpA would suffer "devastating damage" from a new media bill proposed by the Italian center-left government, company chairman Fedele Confalonieri said Wednesday, according to Italian news agencies.
The draft legislation would require Mediaset, founded by former Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi, and rival state broadcaster RAI each to move one of their three networks on to digital terrestrial broadcast within 15 months of the approval of the law.
The government said the bill is aimed at opening the market to competitors and establishing new rules for the shift from analog to digital terrestrial broadcasting, set for 2012, in an attempt to boost pluralism of media ownership in Italy.

Mediaset Chairman Fedele Confalonieri, appreciating “the results of the long-standing relationship and Booz Allen’s international and local teaming culture,” later asked Booz Allen to help his company transform digital discontinuity into a business opportunity.
Mediaset could have maintained its analog leadership for several more years, but it took on the challenge of becoming a digital broadcaster well in advance of the legal requirement.
Working with Gina Nieri, Mediaset’s director of institutional and strategic affairs, the Booz Allen team articulated the opportunity that digital TV presented, helping management understand lessons learned in other geographies both through direct conversations with broadcasting executives in those countries and through analogies drawn from other industries.

 Prodi Says He Won't Turn Against Berlusconi's Mediaset - World News - Playfuls.com - Science & Technology
With Mediaset and RAI running three nationwide television channels each and together controlling more than 90 per cent of the country's terrestrial television market, Bertinotti said Mediaset "ought to slim down" both in terms of advertisement revenue and number of television channels.
Mediaset shares had plunged nearly 2 per cent after preliminary results of the April 9-10 general election suggested Prodi had gained a convincing victory but rebounded after final results showed that he had obtained only a wafer-thin majority in parliament.
Berlusconi, whose family owns a 36 per cent stake in Mediaset, is rumoured to be considering selling the company to his five children.

 Italy eyes Mediaset's new role
The most likely candidates to assume Berlusconi's political role are 50-year-old Pier Ferdinando Casini, former president of the chamber of deputies from the Christian Democracy party, and Gianfranco Fini, 54, a former foreign minister and deputy prime minister and the leader of the party that rose from the ashes of Benito Mussolini's fascists.
"There is no doubt that Mediaset is in a position to crown one of these men the leader of the Italian opposition and then to make things difficult for (newly elected Prime Minister Romano) Prodi," Claudio di Sandro, an author and media sector analyst with Rome's Catholic University, said in an interview.
But Mediaset CEO Giuliano Adreani has always been successful in running a tight ship despite Berlusconi's political maneuverings, and there seems to be no reason why they wouldn't continue now that the company's controlling shareholder is out of office.
