In mid-2002, the software was further rewritten and improved ("Phase III") by Lee Daniel Crocker, and has been incrementally developed from this code base since.

Wikipedia:MediaWiki namespace - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Until June 2004, the MediaWiki namespace was also used for creating other boilerplate text messages, to be used in articles.
This function was replaced with the Template namespace as a function of the "Template namespace initialisation script", a bot ran by developer Tim Starling.
These were moved to the Template: space in June 2004 and are now (as of January 2006) subpages of wikipedia:Articles for deletion or wikipedia:Votes for deletion.

Geek to Live: Set up your personal Wikipedia - Lifehacker
Note: MediaWiki is advanced wiki software that requires Apache web server, the PHP scripting language and the MySQL database server installed to run.
Keith, Adam and I use a Lifehacker MediaWiki installation to collaborate on site ideas and drafts, and I use a wiki to keep personal notes on programming techniques, to track software serial numbers, quotes I like, and other relevant links and articles.
The main learning curve with MediaWiki is the special markup (Wikitext) that it uses to format a page.

NewsForge | Putting MediaWiki to use in an organization
MediaWiki is based on PHP, and so as well as being able to use any PHP functionality within a page, you can actually build your own extensions to MediaWiki.
As someone who uses mediawiki for 4 different wikis (Bloomingpedia [bloomingpedia.org], BLUG Website [bloomingtonlinux.org], suso.org's [suso.org] internal documentation and Cook Incorporated's [cookmedical.com] internal documentation wiki) I can say from using it for Cook Inc. that MediaWiki is not really the right tool for corporate wikis.
MediaWiki does have its limitations-- better integration with our sales reports and bugzilla would be great places to start, but we'll crack those soon enough.

MediaWiki is the software Consumerium uses on its RandD wiki which you are using right now.

Nor does it implement some features of the content wiki or opinion wiki that will be needed eventually to deliver Consumerium Services such as signing versions of articles, which is needed for non-centralized integrity burden of proof.

After MediaWiki is installed, you may want to beautify the URLs it uses.
This might be what you think you want to do now, but if you should ever change your mind you're either stuffed, or you break all external links coming in to your wiki as you move all the pages, or you have to special-case every single non-wiki page.
MediaWiki will work correctly, but this setting increases your exposure to potential security vulnerabilities in PHP-based software running on your server.

Page-by-page authentication in MediaWiki In the interests of centralizing information, we’ve started an internal wiki at the Center that will eventually function as a sort of dynamic handbook to our facilities, staff and projects.
The choice of a wiki was ideal, because each staff member can flesh out the documentation on his or her projects, and since it’s for internal use, we can take the general good intentions of users for granted.

Now, MediaWiki is/provides some software/scripts that facilitate this definition, and is what the wiki your reading uses.
They provide an installation utility for you, all you really need to know (well, maybe not *all*, but *most*) is the location of your database, and what user/password combo you need to access it.
You also need to be able to set write permissions to the directory containing the MediaWiki, but only for about the whole 10 minutes it takes you to setup the wiki, and then copy a file.

Gentoo Linux Documentation -- MediaWiki: Cross-site scripting vulnerability
MediaWiki is vulnerable to a cross-site scripting attack that could allow arbitrary JavaScript code execution.
MediaWiki fails to escape a parameter in the page move template correctly.
By enticing a user to visit a specially crafted URL, a remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to inject malicious JavaScript code that will be executed in a user's browser session in the context of the vulnerable site.

O'Reilly Network -- Web Apps with Tiger: MediaWiki
MediaWiki's change tracking is one of the best I've seen.
In addition to the "Recent changes" page mentioned above, there's also the ability to "enhance" its display via a user preference: when enabled, all daily changes to a single document are condensed into an expandable group, which substantially reduces the clutter of an undecided and frequent content editor.
If there's one document that should be treasured like a million-dollar lifeline, then it's the MediaWiki FAQ, which includes answers to such common concerns as changing the links in the sidebar, that blasted logo, allowing edits for authenticated users only, messing with the various bits of text sprinkled through the interface, et cetera, et cetera.

Gentoo Linux Documentation -- MediaWiki: Multiple vulnerabilities
MediaWiki is vulnerable to cross-site scripting, data manipulation and security bypass attacks.
A security audit of the MediaWiki project discovered that MediaWiki is vulnerable to several cross-site scripting and cross-site request forgery attacks, and that the image deletion code does not sufficiently sanitize input parameters.
By tricking a user to load a carefully crafted URL, a remote attacker could hijack sessions and authentication cookies to inject malicious script code that will be executed in a user's browser session in context of the vulnerable site, or use JavaScript submitted forms to perform restricted actions.

ContentBanning in mediawiki is done using a single regular expression in the variable $wgSpamBlacklist, but we recommend you also install the Spam Blacklist extension, which allows you to maintain the list of regular expressions one domain name per line (a more sensible readable format).
It should be easy to create a MediaWiki compatible version then, all the URLs are stored in the DB without the http:// anyway.
MediaWiki is popular, but this is an extension so fewer people will use it and they already have fllists.
