Researchers studied blood pressure in 346 British men and women whose size had been measured at birth and for the first 10 years of life.
The study was funded by the British Heart Foundation and the UK Medical Research Council.
The researchers found that lower birth weight and greater weight gain between ages one and five were associated with higher systolic blood pressure (the top number in a blood pressure reading) in adults.

The research ranges from the functional analysis of single genes to the development of novel therapies in the clinic for a variety of human diseases, such as muscular dystrophy, motor neuron disease, ataxia, Alzheimer's disease, Rasmussen's disease and congenital myasthenia.
