Doctor of Medicine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Canada, the M.D. is the basic medical degree required to practise medicine; as well, in most provinces, the provincial college of physicians and surgeons grants practice rights to American-trained osteopathic physicians.
Medical degrees are professional degrees and are distinct from research doctorates (Doctor of Philosophy, or Ph.D.), which require a graduate thesis (doctoral dissertation).
At most medical schools, the first two years primarily involve classroom instruction in both lecture and laboratory formats while the final two years are comprised of a series of clerkships in clinical departments such as family practice, surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, and obstetrics/gynecology.

Chapter 4: Medical Practice without a Medical Degree
Recognizing the importance to Richardson of obtaining medical credentials if he was to survive in the academic arena, Drake on 31 December 1817 wrote to David Hosack, M.D., at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York requesting that Richardson be given an honorary M.D. degree.
The Honorary degree of Doctor of Medicine was awarded to Richardson on 6 April 1819, thus bespeaking Drake's already considerable stature in the medical profession at the age of 33.
The cause of the delay in awarding the degree is unknown but was probably related to the complicated process by which such degrees were conferred, not by the College but by the Regents of the University of the State of New York.
