Chemical & Engineering News: Latest News - Metal Pollution From Medieval Mining Persists
Heavy metals are distributed in the environment because of natural and anthropogenic mechanisms.
While it's not surprising that large quantities of heavy metals have staying power in soil and rocks, this study is one of the first to systematically attribute present-day pollution levels to an ancient source of man-made pollution.
By comparing the lead-isotope ratios found in the slag to those found in rock and soil, Baron's team illustrated that binary mixing between slag and granite was the primary method of dispersion and verified that the medieval pollution contributed at least 40% of the lead found in the granite.

Black metal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Black metal is a musical genre which emerged in the early 1980s predating the great expansion of heavy metal 'extreme' genres.
A distinct feature of the fl metal is the use of corpse paint, a special kind of fl and white make-up which was used to make the wearer look like a decomposing corpse or plague victim.
Black metal enthusiasts also started to terrorize other notable "death metal" bands that were touring their country or in neighboring countries, on the basis of their lack of apparent "evilness".

Medieval representations of goldsmiths’ workshops, usually showing the two patron saints of goldsmiths, St. Eloy (Eligius) or St. Dunstan, at work, are important visual sources for the procedures, objects of art, and tools mentioned in the description above.
The real beauty of medieval jewels lay in the carefully designed contrast between the shining silver or gold and the decoration of the surface with niello, enamel, gems, and coloured glass paste.
In late medieval representations of goldsmiths’ workshops, the goldsmith is shown in possession of large quantities of already cut stones, probably acquired from the jeweller (Petrus Christus: St.

Medieval were one of those long-lost odd little bands with an original sound that, while quite good, never caught on with the mainstream metal audience.
In some respects they were a band ahead of its time, as their brand of sludgy, punky metal had some similarities with the early Seattle grunge sound that hadn't quite taken hold at that time.
The band's sound and lack of image (the normal short-haired guys look, popularized to some extent many years later by Helmet) made them slight outsiders in the metal world, yet their music was undeniably metallic and, not only that, quite entertaining.

medieval at this point was managed by Bobby K., who had aspirations that the band could be a more commercial act; so medieval was taken into the studio to cut what was to be a preliminary top-40 demo tape to gain access into the club circuit.
With release of the tape, medieval was hailed by Bob Muldowney from Kick*Ass Monthly as “the best metal outfit without a label.” medieval was selling tapes and gaining recognition throughout the metal underground in magazines like Kick*Ass Monthly, Sledgehammer Press and Guillotine, as well as causing somewhat of a controversy with their live appearances.

Though they do play fl metal (which is synonymous with fast) it's a shame that Abigor doesn't slow down more often because they play some great sorrowful riffs in "Weeping Midwintertears," showing off their genuine musical talent.

 Wire: The raw material
Certainly medieval metal workers have been familiar with the differences between iron and steel since ancient times.
Pattern welded swords dating to the second century show that the mechanical properties and benefits of both metals were understood and put to use, making swords that combined both metals to produce one that was both hard enough to hold an edge and yet tough enough to take the abuse of battle.
This may have been done by testing various blooms with a chisel to find ones that seemed harder than others, or though spark testing, whereby a piece of metal is held against a grinding wheel, and a judgment made based on the color and shape of the sparks produced.

medieval style really gets thrown into the present - where centuries-old music and lyrics get placed in a contemporary metal backdrop.
The arch-exponents of the style are Berlin's In Extremo, who started as a more traditional medieval set-up before adding more convential rock instruments to their line-up, playing both traditional songs as well as their own musical creations.
It should also be mentioned (even though it's really a different genre) that a number of fl metal and death metal bands have also incorporated traditional instruments into their sound - Eastern European bands such as Skyforger and Nokturnal Mortum are two such example.
