The Mediterranean Fleet achieved an especially high degree of professional excellence under the leadersip of Admiral Roger Keyes from 1926 to 1929.
The Mediterranean Fleet has since been disbanded though the Royal Navy maintains a presence with the deployment of a warship to the NATO multi-national squadron Standing Naval Force Mediterranean (STANAVFORMED).

Fleet Air Arm officer who in a dog-fight over Korea was the first and only Fleet Air Arm pilot of a piston-engined aircraft, Sea Fury, to shoot down a jet-engined aircraft, a MiG during the Korean War whilst operating with 802 squadron from HMS Ocean in August 1952.
He was an instructor at the Fleet Fighter School, RNAS Yeovilton in 1941-42, and in September 1942, he had his first command: 882 squadron, and took part from HMS Victorious in the Operation Torch landings in North Africa in November.
He was one of the earliest of the Fleet Air Arm's "early birds", gaining his wings on the second naval pilot's training course at RAF Netheravon in 1925.

She returned to Boston on 5 April and sailed for the Mediterranean on 1 May. While she was at sea, the Suez crisis broke out; and she was diverted to Rhodes in the Eastern Mediterranean where she joined the fleet on 14 May and assumed her flagship duties.
In April and August 1957, the 6th Fleet, by its presence in the eastern Mediterranean, twice showed United States support for the government of Jordan threatened by subversion.

A new WWF report - Biodiversity impact of the Moroccan drifnet fleet in the Alboran Sea - reveals that, with 177 boats, the Moroccan driftnet fleet is the most lethal for Mediterranean marine biodiversity.
The Italian driftnet fleet - with about 700 boats in the early 1990's - received subsidies from the EU for restructuring the fleet, but there are still up to 100 non-compliant boats.
According to the WWF report, about 23,000 sharks are also captured annually by the Moroccan driftnet fleet in the Alboran Sea, and another 77,500 are caught in the neighbouring areas.

 Royal Navy: Admiral of the Fleet Viscount Cunningham of Hyndhope 1883-1963
In the 1930s Cunningham served mostly in the Mediterranean and in June 1939 became Commander-in-Chief, Mediterranean Fleet, the navy’s most prestigious fleet command.
Without air cover Cunningham’s fleet suffered serious losses but responded magnificently to his call that the ‘Navy must not let the army down.’ Out of 22,000 troops on Crete 16,500 were rescued but three cruisers and six destroyers were sunk and a further 15 major warships damaged.
On 10 September he was present at Malta to witness the surrender of the Italian fleet, ending a three year struggle for control of the Mediterranean.
