  Long Shot, Medium Shot, Close-Up
Medium shots can be shot with any lens, but generally a medium lens is a lens that has the least amount of distortion, which is the same as to say that it photographs people and scenery in the way you normally see them in true perspective.
The medium shot should generally contain all the action of the scene and it should be well matched with the flow of the long shot, so that the editor can cut smoothly or effectively at practically any point between them.
If the medium shot is a continuation or a further development of the story contents captured by the long shot, then the medium shot should be matched to some characteristic of the long shot with which it is supposed to be intercut.

Medium shot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In film, a medium shot is a camera shot from a medium distance.
The dividing line between "long shot" and "medium shot" is fuzzy, as is the line between "medium shot" and "close-up".
In some standard texts and professional references, a full-length view of a human subject is called a medium shot; in this terminology, a shot of the person from the knees up or the waist up is a close-up shot.

Long shot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In film and television, a long shot is a view from a distance.
A long shot typically shows the entire object or human figure and is usually intended to place it in some relation to its surroundings.
The distinction between a long shot and a medium shot is a fuzzy one that depends mostly on context.

When cutting from a shot to another shot of a different shot size (e.g, from a wide shot to a medium wide shot) while framing the same subject, the difference in image size must be decisive.
The usual compromise is to have a shot of a shot size that is inbetween the sizes of the two shots (e.g., from a wide shot to a medium shot, and then to a close-up shot).
When cutting from a shot to another shot with a different camera angle (e.g, from a frontal shot to a three quarter front), framing the same subject, the difference between the two camera angles must be greater than 35 degrees.

Use this when you want a closer look at your subject, or when you need to transition between wide shots and close-up shots (it is difficult for the viewer to follow what you are doing if you go straight from a wide shot to a close-up shot).
This particular shot is also called "over the shoulder" because the photographer is literally shooting video of you over the shoulder of the person you are interviewing.
For example, a sequence could be a wide shot of the Bay, followed by a medium shot of a few windsurfers, followed by a single windsurfer zipping through the water.

 GLOSSARY OF FILM TERMS
Thus, a shot that goes on for a long time without an edit is called a "long take." During filming the same piece of action may be filmed from the same camera setup several times (e.g., trying for different emotions on the part of the actors); each time is called a take.
A long shot usually at the beginning of a scene, to establish the spatial relationships of the characters, actions, and spaces depicted in subsequent closer shots.
Insert: A shot of a static object, such as a book, letter, clock, murder weapon, pile of cash, inserted during the editing process, generally between two shots of a character looking offscreen, usually to indicate that this is what s/he is looking at.

In editing phase, selected shots are assembled into a scene, scenes into a final piece in a way that the story is told in an effective way.
On the other hand, when cutting from a shot to another shot of a significantly different shot size (e.g, from a wide shot to a close-up shot), you will produce a shock effect which is most likely inappropriate.
If you are using multiple cameras and plan to edit the different shots in a scene as a seamless sequence, an important rule to keep in mind is to place all the cameras on the same side of a line of action.

When a director shoots the star in Medium Long Shot and then decides to move in for a medium close up, the position of the body (including hands and legs) has to be consistent from shot to shot.
Once that happens the establishing shot is broken down but we are still aware of where we are because the 180 line is observed.
Now a new establishing shot (or a reestablishing shot) is used to set up the dynamics of space (it’s still the same scene but we’ve expanded our sense of place).

Shots are usually described in terms of camera distance with respect to an object within the shot.
The camera is sufficiently distanced from the body for the character to be seen in relation to his or her surroundings.
Thus, high- or low-angle shots are used to indicate where the character is looking; panoramic shots suggest a character's view of a landscape; and tracking shots signify that a character is in motion.

Finer grain and higher resolution allowed the use of the much smaller film format for more demanding applications, and when combined with smaller camera and lens size, longer film loads, ease of use and usually greater versatility the arguments were compelling.
This tutorial is therefore devoted to explaining the jargon that's unique to medium format, some of the major difference with 35mm, and takes a brief overview of the model choices available.
One thing to keep in mind is that medium format camera lenses are typically a stop slower than their 35mm equivalents.
