CHECK LISTS FOR MEDIUM SPEED ENGINES
For four-stroke medium speed diesel engines running on HFO, a quick and practical check for burnt exhaust valves is to roll the engine with turning gear whilst feeling with the back of your hand expelled compression gases at each cylinder indicator cock.
However, due to the difficulty in locating piston ring blow-by with some data collecting equipment, it might be necessary to revert back to the tried and tested method of putting air into each cylinder via the indicator cock, with the piston on the compression stroke just after the inlet and exhaust valves have closed.
But for two-stroke slow speed engines close the air to distributor valve.

The Medium Speed 4 Stroke Trunk Piston Engine
Medium speed engines have a higher power to weight ratio than the slow speed two strokes, but due to the higher speeds tend to have reduced maintenance intervals.
The purpose of the skirt or trunk in four-stroke cycle engines is to act in a similar manner to a crosshead.
With such engines, which are termed trunk-piston engines, the engine height is considerably reduced compared with that of a crosshead engine of similar power and speed.

4-stroke engines - Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor
4-stroke engines: 4-stroke medium speed diesel engines are mainly used for power generation into smaller electrical grids such as on islands, in remote areas, in fast track development projects, or for industrial purposes such as auto-producer.
Medium speed engines are competitive for intermediate or base load power plants up to the 200 MW range.
BWSC 2-stroke low speed diesel engines are used for base load power generation in large utilities or in Independent Power Producer (IPP) plants.

Marine and industrial medium speed engines of Z40 series
Most of the engines work as main propulsion on medium-size ships, some as originally designed for stationary power generation, some as reserve power source for nuclear power plants.
The engines were built in many variants for first MDO, later added HFO in marine and stationary versions, in L and V cylinder arrangement, reversible and non-reversible.
ZA40 engines were not very successful: only several ones have been built, including 3 ones by Zgoda in Poland.

 Slow Speed Diesel Engines
Electric companies are switching a lot of their power generation from medium speed diesels and steam turbines to slow speed diesels because of these efficiencies and longer life of the engine.
The engine is set up with two fuel tanks and first started on common diesel fuel or bio-diesel.
One engine that seems to be perfect for the home do-it-yourselfer is the Lister CS engine.

 MAN Diesel - PRODUCTS->STATIONARY POWER->MEDIUM-SPEED ENGINES
Four-stroke medium-speed diesel engines dominate base load power generation up to plant sizes of 200 MW, where their competitive first-cost, high efficiencies and low life-cycle costs underwrite success.
These engines comfortably meet current emission standards, and are able to comply with more stringent national codes by adding emission reduction equipment.
In addition to four-stroke medium-speed engines suitable for operation on residual fuels, crude oil and distillate fuels, MAN Diesel offers a variety of engines for operation on gas, with retrofit possibilities.

High-speed units are derived from automotive or truck engines and operate at 1,200 to 3,600 rpm.
Medium-speed engines are derived from locomotive and small marine engines, and operate at 275 to 1,000 rpm, have higher capital costs, but also have greater efficiency.
Low-speed engines are designed to burn low-quality residual fuels and are practical only if there is a large price differential between heavy oil and natural gas and there are no environmental restrictions (not in U.S.).
