Main Battle Tank - www.canadiansoldiers.com   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Tank classification in the Second World War was done at first by intended role, and then by weight (though the designations "light", "medium" and "heavy" generally refer to a combination of firepower, armour protection, and speed in addition to physical size).
Medium tanks became general purpose platforms, as in practice, the Allies found that enemy tanks could not be solely the responsibility of specialized anti-tank or tank destroyer units.
The first tank formation of the Canadian Army to arrive overseas was the 1st Canadian Army Tank Brigade (consisting of the 11th, 12th, and 14th Canadian Army Tank Battalions), landing in the UK in July 1941.

 Great Britain's Medium Tanks
The Medium C was the last tank to be so designed, and the speed was low as a result.
These multi-turret tanks were based on the Independent and built at the request of the War Office in an effort to find the next generation of tanks to replace the Mark I and Mark II.
These tanks came initially armed with US 75mm, 76mm, and 105mm guns, however, it was the British conversion to the Firefly design that made this tank a real battle winner.

Lone Sentry: The Most Effective Jap Tank, Type 97 (U.S. WWII Intelligence Bulletin, July 1945)
In many instances, tanks were observed moving in convoy with general-purpose vehicles; however, it was not definitely determined whether this was done to give protection to the column or as a matter of convenience.
In firing on the front of the tank at a range of 35 yards, penetrations were registered on the ball-mounted machine gun only; no penetrations were made on the vision aperture, turret, or curved or sloping surfaces.
At 50 yards, 35 percent penetrations were made in the plate behind the suspension system (on the side of the tank), the hall mount of the rear machine gun, and the under surface of the rear of the tank.

Medium Tank T23   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The T23 was one of the T20 series of medium tanks designed to replace the M4 Sherman, ultimately culminating in the M26 Pershing.
The T23's electric drive mechanism was a novel way to move a tank, having been previously tested in the heavy tank T1E1 (sometimes referred to as M6A2), and worked by having the GAN engine power an electric generator which in turn drove two traction motors which were connected to the tank's final drives.
Although it was proposed to standardize T23 as the medium tank M27 once it had been fitted with torsion bar suspension (making it T23E3), it was not adopted due to maintenance problems and concerns over training of maintenance personnel to deal with the electric drive system.

World War 2: T34 Soviet tank
It was the most heavily armoured medium tank produced to this point, and subassemblies originated at several plants: Kharkov Diesel Factory No. 75 supplied the model V-2 engine, Leningrad Kirovsky Factory (former Putilov works) made the original L-11 gun, and the Dinamo Factory in Moscow produced electrical components.
However, the new tank suffered from severe mechanical problems, especially with its transmission and clutch—at least fifty percent of the first summer's total tank losses were due to breakdowns rather than German fire, although this also included old tanks in disrepair (Zaloga and Grandsen 1984:127).
The infantry tank/cavalry tank concept was shown to be obsolete, and abandoned by all nations by the war's end.

The T-44 medium tank wasn't in large-scale producing like the T-26 or so widespread in use like the T-34, also it wasn't the main battle tank for the post-war period like the T-54/55, but it took a worthy place in the history of Soviet tank development.
After the tests it became clear that 122 mm guns were not for medium tanks, rather for heavy ones.
The tank's turret was too cramped to operate with such long and heavy ammunition and besides the T-44-2 had limited ammunition stowage - only 24 rounds, being insufficient for a medium tank.

The tank was actually a hybrid of sorts, and merged the T42 turret with the proven M46 chassis.
The M47 continued to serve in the U.S. Army until it was replaced by the M48; the M47 was also the first tank supplied to the Bundeswehr in the form of military aid.

 M26 Pershing Medium Tank (USA)
The M26 Pershing Heavy Tank entered service in 1945 and saw limited combat in Germany where it was able to contend with the German PzKpfw V and VI (Panther and Tiger) tanks on a more equal footing than the M4 Sherman.
The tank was supposed to be an improvement on the M4 but the Ordnance Department hoped to use it as a test bed for different combinations of armament, transmissions and suspensions.
The tank was soon reclassified as a medium tank however, and while it didn't have time to make any real impact in the Second World War, it served with distinction in the Korean War alongside the M4A3E8 Sherman.

In addition to the battle tanks, the T-34 hull and chasis were used as a basis for a variety of specialist vehicles, such as flame-throwing tanks, mine-rollers, and recovery tanks, and for the SU-85 and SU-100 self-propelled guns.
The tank belonged to the Bosnian-Serb army and was in a defensive position.
