This County was chosen as the first one in the series of the counties which are to be visited in the future (the visit is planned for all the counties throughout the entire Republic of Croatia) because of the discriminatory behaviour of the local authorities from Medjimurje towards the Roma people living in the region.
Specifically, there are two main reasons why we have demanded that the representative of the County Council see us, and these were: the death of the Roma baby in the settlement Trnovec and the existence of 14 schools in the region which carry out segregation of the Roma children.
The district prefect, Branko Levačić, claim that the existence of the schools in which there exist separate entrances for the Roma children is justified because of the very bad hygienic habits of the Roma people and their poor level of knowledge in comparison with other children.
