Björk: Medulla: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-15)
Medulla suggests that if she is artistically important-- and I should preface all of this by stating I don't normally evaluate music or musicians based on my perception of their "importance"; Björk simply makes it difficult to do otherwise-- it's as a small scale model of the same individualist, mundane obsessions that dominate popular culture.
Medulla is the result of concentrated efforts on behalf of the best and brightest Björk could round up, and in the spirit of her symbolic godfather Miles Davis, betrays her knack for using talent to her best advantage.
Throughout the album, Björk's commitment to bringing out the strength of her melodies, despite considerable opportunity to get lost in the wall of sound, is admirable and the mark of someone who understands the importance of serving her songs.

BBC - Experimental Review - Bjork, Medúlla
That is not to say this album does not have rhythym, with the assistance of Dokaka, Shlomo and the astounding Rahzel, tracks such as "Where is the Line" and "Triumph of the Heart" are given earthy beats which sythesized drums could not acheive.
Vespertine is ok, but Medulla is a bit beyond the limits of patience.I am still a fan of Bjork but it does not mean that everything she tries suceeds.Although Oceania is a great song the whole album is far from supplying the same taste at all.
Many people say that the album does not make sense to them until they've listened to it a few times, but the fact that the meaning of the new album does not become apparent upon the first listening shows that Bjork's new direction is not particularly accessible to the listener.

Anemic Magazine: Bjork - Medulla Album Review
Bjork's fifth solo album "Medulla" is yet another string to her bow.
Only Bjork could pull off an album where instruments are oblivious and soundscapes are made up of choirs, beat boxing, and voice loops that result in something just plain obscure and hard to swallow.
Despite the lacklustre that "Medulla" holds, at times, 'Where is the Line' has just the right amount of what Bjork is trying to achieve with this album.

 IGN: Medulla Review
This is the type of album that audiophiles cream over; you know the album that high-end stereo salesmen like to put on to demonstrate the full stereophonic range of their multi-million dollar speaker systems.
The album concludes with the most erratic and quirky number of the entire set: "Triumph of a Heart." The "human trombone" of Gregory Purnhagen intertwines itself with the dueling beatbox verbal acrobatics of Rahzel and Dokaka, creating a strange cross culture of head nodding dance music and fairy tale pop cacophony.
But those who are willing to open up their medulla oblongata's and let the rich, textured vocal nuances flutter between their aural receptors will be blessed by an intriguing and incredibly beguiling effort that continues to reveal new eccentricities and hypnotic nuances with each passing listen.

 Medúlla by Björk: Album Reviews
The album's title and concept refer to the purest essence of something, and Medúlla explores both the ritual power of the human voice and some of the most essential themes of Björk's music in a way that's both primal and elaborate.
Neopaganism and unfettered sensuality also wind through the album, particularly on "Mouth's Cradle," along with meditative, Vespertine-like pieces such as "Desired Constellation." Medúlla is unusually intimate: Björk's voice is miked very closely, and with the dense layers of vocals surrounding her, it often sounds as if you're listening to the album from inside her larynx.
On paper, it may look as though Bjork is shunning commerciality and moving forward musically with her gimmicky new album, Medulla, which purports to eschew the use of traditional instrumentation in favor of using the human voice to create all of the sounds and melodies, but by limiting herself and...

Dictionary of Meaning www.mauspfeil.net   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-15)
The album is almost entirely a capella, with almost no instruments (except for a piano on ''Ancestors'' and a gong on ''Pleasure is All Mine'') other than the human voice; even the atmospheric haze that constitutes "Desired Constellation" was created from a sample of Björk singing ''"I'm not sure what to do with it"''.
The album reached a position of #9 on the UK Top 75 Albums Chart, #16 in Australia, and #14 on the U.S. Billboard 200 - her highest ever position.
Considering that the album is almost entirely a capella (though some of the voices have been electronically processed), is it accurate to classify it into the genre electronica?

 björk : albums : MEDÚLLA
She wanted the album to consist only of accapella work.
I was going to call the album ‘Ink’, because I wanted it to be like that fl, 5,000 year-old blood that’s inside us all; an ancient spirit that’s passionate and dark, a spirit that survives.
And with this album being all vocals, that made sense.

No Ripcord Album Review - Bjork - "Medulla"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-15)
Medulla follows up Vespertine with a similar level of transition as occurred between that album and Homogenic.
Basically, bits of Medulla sound similar to Vespertine, but there’s a marked distinction in the means of delivery and enough change to keep things interesting.
I have to admit that I like pretty much every solo album Bjork has recorded, so I’m unable to say whether Medulla is an album that can change opinions.

This is the first Bjork album I have ever bought, and I will go back now through her musical history.
Some of the album is admittedly abstract and I don't like every bit of it, but it's definitely worth picking up if you're a fan, and worth listening to otherwise.
This album is just plain wierd (not that her others aren't a bit quirky) and has very little listen value.

 BBC - Manchester - Entertainment - Bjork - Medulla
Always unfathomable, she approached this, her fifth studio album proper with the idea that instruments are over.
She’s wrong, of course, but you can't help but be impressed at her attempts to create an entire album without them (more or less, there are programmed beats on here and one piano, but do they count?).
Medulla is probably her most challenging long player yet, as stark, mystifying and rich as her screen performance in Dancer In The Dark, and though it strays in places into areas where ambition and reality miss each other, it is a brutally beautiful album.

Björk’s seventh album, “Medulla,” which refers to the spinal cord in Latin, gets to the heart of the marrow, so to speak.
Though “Medulla” may not be as dynamic as Björk’s past albums, the minimalist sound is undeniably beautiful.
But it is the last few songs on the album that are the most surprising offerings from the band, songs with a political message.

 IGN: Medulla Review
Continuing to weave in and out of her own singular sonic spectrum, Medulla unfolds with soft, quirky aplomb, revealing itself as a densely packed swirl of minimalistic energy.
Now when I say "minimalistic" I mean in the sense that there are virtually no instruments on the album.
The album commences on a somewhat somber note with "Pleasure Is All Mine," Bjork's voice "oooh-oooohing" between the left and right channel as layered panting gasps swirl in the ether and throaty throbs burble underneath.

Medulla by Bjork CD at CD Universe
Using the mouth as the primary instrument--vocal, percussive, and otherwise--MEDULLA evokes the ethereal sound of an angelic spirit and a group of Benedictine monks desperately hurtling through outer space.
The album, which also features art-rock pioneer Robert Wyatt, shifts back and forth between ambitious, operatically layered tracks ("Where Is the Line," "Desired Constellation") and more direct a cappella songs ("Show Me Forgiveness," "Oll Birtan").
Bjork reaches her peak when she combines both of these seemingly disparate forces, as in the electrifying "Who Is It (Carry My Joy on the Left, Carry My Pain on the Right)" and the album-closer, "Triumph of a Heart." MEDULLA proves that, once again, when it comes to sheer musical audacity, Bjork knows no boundaries.

 KAADA/PATTON, "Romances"
On "Romances," this newly baptized duo gives Patton's long-delayed Peeping Tom project with Dan the Automator a good run for its money by manifesting a collusion of samples and voice that utilizes everything from Esquivel to Phil Spector to Chopin to 19th century French pop.
Kaada, still burning hot off the critical acclaim awarded his 2003 debut album, "Thank You for Giving Me Your Valuable Time," astounds here, pushing his art beyond the SP1200 to incorporate a bevy of live instruments (steel guitar, drums and bass clarinet) into his already dense groove theory.
Meanwhile Patton, last heard in a dream alliance with Bjork on her new "Medulla" album, hasn't sounded this smooth since Lovage, proving once again why he is one of the most crucial crooners in modern music.

Everybody's favorite Icelandic siren has been hard at work on new material, which is supposed to favor an all-vocal delivery instead of using instruments.
