It was previously known as "The Medway Towns" as the region consists of five towns on the River Medway that have gradually merged together.
After several trips she was back in the Medway for a refit when on the morning of 27th May 1915 another huge internal explosion tore through the vessel, shaking the ground for miles around and showering the surrounding villages with remains of bodies and debris.
In 1944 a Medway Towns Joint Amalgamation Committee was formed by the borough corporations of Chatham, Gillingham and Rochester, to discuss the possibility of the towns forming a single county borough.

Yalding is a village and civil parish in the Maidstone District of Kent, England.
Yalding was one of the principal shipment points on the River Medway for cannon, made by the villages of the Wealden iron industry.

The Chatham Main Line is the British railway line that runs from London Victoria to Dover Priory or Ramsgate via the Medway Towns (of which Chatham is one, hence the name) and Bromley).
The line was built by the London, Chatham and Dover Railway, who were in competition with the South Eastern Railway (hence the duplication of stations in Kent).
The line was electrified (750v DC third rail) to Gillingham by Southern prior World War Two.

This walk is set in the Eden Valley, which for the most part is in the care of the National Trust.
The aim of the walk was to follow the course of the River Eden as far as its confluence with the Medway, and then to continue along the Medway's banks as far as Tonbridge Castle.

A linear walk along a rural section of the Medway Valley Walk, via Teston picnic site and country park, two locks, two medieval bridges, one boat yard, two marinas and returning on the train using the Medway Valley Line.
One of ten locks on the River Medway inland waterway, Farleigh Lock is one of the most pretty places to sit and watch the boats go by, close to the 14th century rag stone bridge, across which Sir Thomas Fairfax marched his army in 1648 towards Maidstone.
Although the footpath follows the bank side, it can get very muddy beneath the bridge, so most people head for the stile in the fence and cross over the road to the Maidstone Borough Council run Teston Country Park, where there are toilets and plenty of parking space.
